Winchester College seeks to appoint a well-qualified, able, and inspiring Teacher of Physics to join a thriving and intellectually stimulating department. Physics is one of the most popular subjects at the College, supported by exceptional facilities including seven laboratories, a rooftop observatory, and a wind tunnel. This role is equally suitable for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) or those with more experience who wish to teach highly motivated pupils in an environment that values practical experimentation, independent inquiry, and academic excellence. The Role Accountable to the Head of Science, the successful candidate will teach across the age and ability range, including CAIE IGCSE (Years 9-11) and OCR Physics A (Sixth Form). Beyond the classroom, the role involves active participation in the pastoral and extra-curricular life of this prestigious boarding school. Your key responsibilities include: Teaching & Academic Excellence
- Timetable Delivery: Teach a set weekly timetable, setting and marking work in accordance with departmental policies.
- Academic Progress: Maintain accurate records of attainment and provide constructive feedback through oral and written tasks.
- Resource Development: Adapt existing lesson resources and produce innovative digital materials to share within the department.
- Examination Support: Assist with the marking of scholarship and entrance exams and invigilate internal and external examinations. Communication & Professional Development
- Reporting: Write insightful pupil reports and monitor progress, communicating effectively with parents via email or face-to-face meetings.
- Meetings: Attend staff meetings, parents' evenings, chapel services, and Professional Development days.
- Continuous Growth: Participate in the school's Professional Development Review and share best practices to encourage departmental innovation. Pastoral & Extra-Curricular
- Tutoring: Act as a tutor to a group of pupils within a boarding house, nurturing their well-being and development.
- Wider School Life: Contribute to the school's extensive extra-curricular programme, such as engineering and astronomy societies or Physics Olympiad training.
- Cover: Provide occasional cover for absences within the department or wider school as required. About You We are looking for an intellectually curious educator with a passion for Physics and the resilience required for life in a full boarding community. Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Education: An excellent Honours degree relevant to Physics.
- Teaching Ability: A track record of outstanding teaching, with the ability to communicate complex concepts in an articulate and sensitive way.
- Classroom Management: Intuitive awareness of classroom dynamics and the ability to build mutual trust and respect with pupils.
- Organisation: Proven ability to manage time effectively to meet the demands of a busy teaching week. Key Qualities
- Inspiration: The ability to motivate pupils of high academic ability and nurture their interest in Engineering, Natural Sciences, and Physics.
- Interpersonal Skills: High emotional intelligence with the ability to empathise with both staff and pupils.
- Resilience: The stamina and flexibility needed to thrive in a demanding boarding school environment.
- Proactive Spirit: A genuine enthusiasm for contributing to the wider life of the school beyond the Physics department. What We Offer

- Salary: Winchester College has its own generous salary scale (above the national scale). Special Responsibility Allowances (SRAs) are available for additional roles.
