The Nuffield Department of Population Health (NDPH), one of the largest departments within the University of Oxford's Medical Sciences Division, is looking for its next Director of Finance and Administration (DFA). Working closely with the Head of Department, and colleagues across the Medical Sciences Division, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the Department's future and leading the professional services that support our world class research and teaching.
About the Role
You will act as the Department's chief operating officer, playing an important role in shaping Departmental strategy and its implementation. You will oversee day-to-day operational management of the Department, ensuring delivery of outstanding operational support for academic staff, researchers and students in support of the Department's academic mission.
NDPH has significant financial turnover and complexity and has substantial links with its external sponsors and other institutions. You will play a key outward facing role representing the Department and build strong and effective relationships with such bodies including government, medical charities and industry.
This is a broad and varied role. You will provide visible and supportive leadership to our Senior Operational Teams, at local divisional and NDPH strategic level. This includes overarching support in finance, HR, research strategy, graduate studies, career development, Athena SWAN, equality and diversity, and communications and public engagement.
As a senior leader, you will also contribute more widely to the Medical Sciences Division and the University, supporting the Divisional Registrar and the wider Professional Services across the University.

You will be an energetic, highly experienced, and innovative leader able to deliver in a complex and fast-moving environment. You will have sound judgement under pressure, be able to think laterally and creatively, and have the intellectual capacity and strength of character to take and implement important, complex, and sometimes difficult decisions. You will be capable of commanding the respect of academic and research staff in the Department as well as the respect of the operational staff. You will already have significant management experience in an academic (or closely related) environment and a proven ability to manage change and respond positively to new challenges. The Department has significant links with its external sponsors and other institutions and the postholder will need the gravitas to be able to represent the Department as necessary.
