Full Job Description

The Estates teams at The Royal London and Mile End Hospitals are responsible for the day-to-day repairs, maintenance and operational testing of a wide range of building services and critical infrastructure across the Trust. As Director of Estates, you will provide strategic and operational leadership to these teams, ensuring high-quality, compliant and responsive services across all sites.

You will oversee the management of both retained and PFI estates, ensuring robust performance, contract compliance and value for money. The role also carries Trust-wide responsibility for Fire Safety and Health & Safety across the relevant sites., Lead and manage the operational estates functions across the Royal London and Mile End Hospital sites, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient building services.

Oversee the performance and contractual delivery of the PFI estate at Royal London Hospital, ensuring high standards and effective partnership working.

Provide expert leadership on statutory compliance, including water hygiene, electrical systems, asbestos, fire safety, medical gases and HVAC systems.

Ensure all estates activities align with HTMs, ACOPs, British Standards, EN Standards and SFG20 maintenance specifications.

Lead and develop multidisciplinary teams, promoting a positive, proactive and high-performing culture.

Provide clear, authoritative advice to senior clinical and non-clinical leaders on estates risks, issues and operational challenges.

Manage delegated budgets effectively, ensuring financial control, value for money and alignment with NHS financial governance.

Contribute to strategic planning, service development and long-term estates improvement programmes.

Participate in the Trust's on-call rota, providing out-of-hours leadership across all Barts Health sites.

We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible and experienced estates professional who can demonstrate:

A strong understanding of HTMs, ACOPs, BS/EN standards and SFG20.

Extensive experience managing statutory compliance in a complex healthcare environment.

Proven leadership in maintenance, engineering and contractor management.

Demonstrable experience managing PFI contracts within a large-scale estate.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical issues to senior leaders and clinical teams.

Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets within an NHS setting.

A positive, solutions-focused approach and the ability to lead teams through challenge and change.
