Direct Payment Worker / Personal Assistant

A lovely gentleman in his early 50s has Downs Syndrome and dementia, hence is extremely vulnerable requires a Personal Assistant to support him at a particular activity. He has slowed down considerably over the past few months physically and cognitively. Walks unsteadily but unaided indoors but lacks confidence and seeks reassurance when outside either from linking arms or from a rollator-walker, which he uses increasingly. Needs a support worker to access the community when at day services in Goole, take him out from home or to be a presence in the home whilst carers are out.
What the role will involve:
5 hours - Wednesdays.
Support with swimming outing from day services in Goole. The support worker will travel with the service user by transport as part of a larger group. Gentleman requires prompting and encouragement to get changed and remain focused. Support worker to accompany him from changing area to the pool and is required to go into the pool for social interaction and general encouragement. Gentleman can swim and enjoys the water. He needs support to exit and get changed again.
Additional hours may be available also but 5 hrs initially for the above.
In the future support with outings into the community, (shopping, cinema, bowling etc) providing transport with appropriate support and social interaction. This may be from the home or whilst at respite care in Beverley.
Supporting in the home with daily tasks, light chores (folding laundry, putting away washing up) and prompts for personal care. Encourage walking outside and exercises as prescibed by physio.
Looking for someone with patience and understanding of the gentleman's situation. Show kindness and encouragement with activities and daily tasks. Someone willing to foster a good and trusting relationship with him.
DBS/Reference checks will be required for this post - Cost to be met by the local authority.
