We’re looking for a dynamic Deputy News Editor who can build on the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star's online growth, while also ensuring our thousands of print readers get the rich storytelling they deserve in their daily paper.

You’ll work with a team of journalists in our newsroom in Ipswich, Suffolk, to get the most out of their stories.

Key Responsibilities

You will grow the audience on the brands’ websites, drive digital subscriptions, help reporters cater to our loyal audience, and ensure our newsletters are of a high standard.

You will work alongside the rest of the newsdesk editors, motivating, mentoring and developing the reporting team.

You will help run the day-to-day news agenda, planning, investigations and campaigns.

You will also lead the content mix for the two printed daily newspapers.

When other editors are away, you will step up and fulfil those duties.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

We are looking for a creative, digitally savvy operator who understands the needs of a modern newsroom and wants to help deliver the best stories to our audience.

The ideal candidates would already be working on a news desk or be experienced senior reporters looking for the next step up.

You will have an excellent knowledge of media law and will be comfortable dealing with members of the public. You may often write your own articles as well.

You will:

  • Be able to inspire a team
  • Drive our news agenda
  • Deputise for other editors when they are off
  • Thrive working under pressure – including reacting to breaking news
  • Know exactly what makes a story
  • Be creative and full of ideas
  • Write articles when needed
  • Create the right mix of content, for the right time of day and platform – online and in print
  • Be able to process and edit copy for both print and online
  • Place copy on pages for the newspapers

Benefits

  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays + your birthday off
  • Holiday buy scheme for extra flexibility
  • Structured career progression & ongoing training
  • Pension plan
  • Employee Helpline counselling and advice
  • Perks & discounts including:
