Full Job Description
The role of Deputy Head of GP School is to support the Primary Care Dean and Head of GP School in delivering strategic and operational educational objectives and to provide leadership for delegated programmes, portfolios, professional groups, functions or geographical areas.
The postholder will work with the Head of GP School and senior educational leadership team to ensure that high-quality education and training are delivered in safe and effective learning environments and that learner supervision, assessment, progression and experience are continuously improved.
The Deputy Head of GP School will exercise leadership through delegated authority and will be expected to lead significant workstreams, programmes, projects or portfolios on behalf of the GP School. This may include responsibility for programme management, quality management, learner support, faculty development, workforce development, placement capacity, curriculum delivery or regional consistency.
Main duties of the job
The role supports NHS England People Directorate in meeting corporate, statutory and professional responsibilities and in implementing national and regional policy, quality frameworks and workforce priorities.
The Deputy Head of GP School will work with GP Associate Deans, Training Programme Directors, educational supervisors, clinical supervisors, programme teams and wider faculty to support effective operational delivery and to ensure that concerns are identified, escalated and addressed appropriately.
The postholder will work across health and, where relevant, social care to ensure that provision of education reflects changing service models and supports multiprofessional collaboration and workforce transformation.
Local arrangements may vary, but the role is expected to combine operational leadership, educational quality management, delegated strategic leadership, faculty development and service improvement responsibilities.
NHS England has a wide range of statutory functions, responsibilities and regulatory powers. These are focused on supporting the wider NHS to deliver high quality care, as well as doing those things that are best done once for the whole NHS.
Our staff bring expertise across clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial specialisms -- enabling us to design and deliver high-quality NHS services.
In March 2025, the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions, ultimately leading to NHS England being fully integrated into the department.
If you currently work within the NHS and if successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR).This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the process.
Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in our offices.
