An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Oncology and Haematology Directorate for a Deputy Directorate Manager position. The Churchill Hospital provides expert care for the Thames Valley for common tumour types, and for a wider region for rarer indications. The Oncology and Haematology Directorate covers several core services which are: Oncology - including an Oncology ward, teenage and young adult unit and Radiotherapy department with 6 linear accelerators Haematology - including a Haematology ward, Bone Marrow Transplant service and patient hotel Oncology and Haematology also share a 5-bedded emergency triage service, two chemotherapy day treatment units (Oxford and Banbury) and an ambulatory unit Palliative Care - which includes day services, a hospital team and a community palliative care service, all provided in conjunction with Sobell House Hospice Charity The directorate also hosts a number of Trust wide services including Radiation Physics and Protection, Clinical Measurement and Clinical Engineering The department has close links with the University of Oxford, and Cancer Research UK, and is a base for world-leading research in the field, so that patients have rapid access to a wide range of new treatments, The Deputy Directorate Manager for the Oncology and Haematology Directorate will support the Directorate Manager, who in conjunction with the Clinical Director and with support of the Matron, are responsible for the operational management of services. The DDM will have a similar portfolio of responsibilities to the DM; · - Service delivery and development · - Business Planning and Financial Management · - Human Resource Management · - Quality, Clinical Governance and Risk Management The post holder will be responsible to leading and delivering success across a number of key programmes within the Directorate. These programmes will be vital in ensuring the Directorate can deliver its primary objectives and targets over the coming years and will encompass a wide range of topics, including productivity and efficiency, quality, workforce and clinical effectiveness., The Oncology and Haematology DDM will have specific responsibility for delivery of the following:
- Reviewing the utilisation, efficiency and patient experience of outpatient services
- Managing and developing Haematology services within the directorate
- Supporting the DM with Consultant Job Planning
- Deputising for the DM The focus of work for the DDM will change year-to-year and will be agreed through the annual appraisal process between the DDM and the DM.
- o Educated to degree level in relevant field or equivalent level of management experience, MBA or post graduate management qualification, o Significant evidence of Operational management experience, in a large complex organisation o Evidence of sourcing, analysing and interpreting data to identify and manage variances in performance and using data to inform solutions to deliver improvement o Experience of business planning techniques and managing business processes o Experience in managing teams through change o Experience of performance managing staff where standards are below the level required o Full range of IT skills, familiar with Microsoft Office o Experience in creating and writing business cases, and seeing them through to implementation and evaluation, Experience of designing/ improving business systems and processes Project management experience Understanding and appreciation of clinical pathways, o General Management Theory and Practice, including quality, financial, management, HR management and service/business development o Change management/service improvement techniques Desirable criteria
- Broad understanding of the NHS and key policy issues that affect business performance, o Highly organised o First class interpersonal skills with ability to gain and sustain credibility with clinicians/managers o Highly skilled in influencing and persuading others to deliver in the context of organisational operational goals and strategic objectives o Able to prioritise and manage the on-going work of services and/or projects. o Results orientated and delivery against targets and deadlines o Able to present well-reasoned and structured argument orally and in writing, Commercial acumen Political awareness - ability to perceive impact of actions on the decisions and activity of others
