Full Job Description
Join HM Treasury at the forefront of global economic policymaking.
As Deputy Director for Global Economics, you will lead a talented analytical team, helping ministers and senior officials navigate major international economic developments and their implications for the UK. Working across government and with international partners, you will shape policy on issues ranging from global growth and trade to economic security and geopolitical risk.
About the Team
Global Economics is a high-profile team at the heart of the Treasury’s international agenda. Combining analytical excellence with policy insight, the team advises on some of the most significant global economic developments affecting the UK. It works closely with departments across government on issues spanning international economics, foreign policy and national security, and recently won the Civil Service Analysis Award for its work on US tariffs and US-EU-China economic dynamics.
About the Job
This is a senior leadership role at the heart of how HM Treasury understands the global economy and its implications for the UK. Leading the Global Economics team, you will provide expert economic analysis and advice, shape international economic policy, and influence decision-making across government. The role offers a unique opportunity to combine analytical leadership, policy influence and international engagement, working on some of the most significant economic and geopolitical challenges facing the UK.
Your responsibilities would include:
- Leading and developing a high-performing team of around 13 analysts, setting strategic direction, building capability and fostering an inclusive culture where people can thrive and deliver their best work. You will directly manage two Grade 6 team leaders and help shape the team's evolving priorities and ways of working.
- Providing expert advice on international economic issues, leading analysis of global economic developments and risks, and helping ministers and senior officials understand their implications for the UK economy, economic policy and national security.
- Shaping HM Treasury's approach to major international economic challenges, including global growth, trade, economic security and geopolitical developments, while overseeing both the team's core analytical responsibilities and high-profile cross-government projects.
- Supporting the Treasury's international engagement, including contributing to ministerial and senior official engagement with international partners and representing HM Treasury in domestic and international forums, including G7 and G20 working groups.
- Championing analytical excellence across the Treasury as a senior leader within the analytical profession, promoting high standards, innovation and the effective use of data, modelling and evidence in decision-making.
- Building influential relationships across government and internationally to advance analytical and policy priorities, and playing an active leadership role across the International Economics Group, the wider International Family and HM Treasury.
Person Specification
We are looking for an exceptional leader with experience in at least two of the following areas: international economic policy, economic analysis or macroeconomic policy. Experience of national security issues would be beneficial but is not essential. The successful candidate will combine strong analytical judgement with outstanding leadership skills, bringing the ability to inspire a high-performing team, communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively, and build influential relationships across government, internationally and with a wide range of external stakeholders. They will also be expected to demonstrate the full range of Senior Civil Service behaviours and a commitment to Civil Service values.
Our Benefits:
- 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), plus 8 public holidays and the King’s birthday (unless you have a legacy arrangement as an existing Civil Servant). Additionally, we operate flexitime systems, allowing employees to take up to an additional 2 days off each month
- Flexible working patterns (part-time, job-share, condensed hours)
- Generous parental and adoption leave packages
- Access to a generous Defined Benefit pension scheme with employer contributions of 28.97%
- Access to a cycle-to-work salary sacrifice scheme and season ticket advances
- A range of active staff networks, based around interests (e.g. analysts, music society, sports and social club) and diversity
