Full Job Description

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a full-time Cyber Engineer as part of the Cyber Innovation Hub (CIH), a Welsh Government and Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) funded programme that is making the Cardiff Capital Region a centre of cyber businesses. CIH does this through increasing cyber security-based start-ups in the region, providing a skills programme targeted at continuing professional development in line with local industry needs, and the provision of representative cyber security testbeds. Working as part of a team, the Cyber Engineer will design, implement and maintain secure systems and testbed environments, support the development and validation of innovative security solutions, and contribute technical expertise to CIH projects. The role will involve assessing and mitigating cyber risks, conducting security testing, and ensuring that CIH infrastructure and collaborative projects adhere to best-practice security standards. Your work will directly support CIH's mission by
strengthening the technical foundations of the programme, enabling safer innovation, and contributing to outcomes that deliver economic benefit for Wales (including training, job creation and new commercial opportunities).

You will be responsible for supporting the existing IT/OT team of engineers in developing secure system architectures, implementing robust cyber-security controls, and maintaining resilient infrastructure across operational and enterprise environments. You will contribute to designing, testing, and deploying security solutions, monitoring threats, responding to incidents, and ensuring compliance with best-practice security standards. Your work will help strengthen the organisation's security posture while enabling safe innovation and reliable system performance.
This role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working at SPARK / ABACUS, you can also choose to spend some time working from another location, e.g. your home. Discussions around these arrangements can take place after the successful candidate has been appointed. The University is committed to offering this flexibility, wherever the role and business need allows, supporting work-life balance.

Cardiff University is committed to supporting all its employees in achieving the necessary balance between their work and their personal lives. As part of this commitment, the University has developed a flexible and responsive framework of support for staff in managing their work and personal commitments wherever possible. [Applications for posts on a part-time or job-share arrangement would also be considered].

Cardiff University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity and to creating an inclusive working environment. We believe this can be achieved through attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse range of staff from many different backgrounds. We therefore welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of sex, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, trans identity, relationship status, religion or belief, caring responsibilities, or age. In supporting our employees to achieve a balance between their work and their personal lives, we will also consider proposals for flexible working or job share arrangements.

Applications may be submitted in Welsh, and an application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.

This position is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed-term until 31 March 2027 and available immediately.

Salary: Starting at £28,031 per annum (Grade 4), with 4 annual increments up to £31,236 per annum at the top of the scale.
