Full Job Description

The Custody Navigator role involves supporting children and young people while they are in Police custody and during the immediate period following their release. This can be a highly stressful and traumatic experience, and the role focuses on providing reassurance, advocacy, and practical support at a critical time. The Custody Navigator works directly within Police custody suites, engaging with young people to build trust and positive relationships. The role involves listening to their concerns, ensuring they feel safe, heard, and understood, and helping them to navigate the custody process in a trauma-informed and child-centred way. Following release, the Custody Navigator continues to support young people within the community. The role offers continuity of support once the young person leaves custody, including follow-up contact, goal setting, and practical assistance to help them move forward positively and reduce the risk of further involvement with the criminal justice system.

This is a dynamic, people-focused role requiring strong communication skills, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with young people who may have complex needs and experiences.,

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a relevant field, i.e. social care, childcare, health, youth work and working with families etc, Operational experience of managing complex cases and workloads.
  • Proven experience of directly working with young people aged 0-19 years.
  • Assessing family situations, developing individual packages of support and translating them into effective integrated support plans aimed at supporting young people and their families.
  • Following safeguarding procedures.
  • Maintaining confidentiality, sharing information appropriately and professionally.
  • Exercise emotional intelligence and demonstrate a developing emotional resilience in relation to the job.
