Full Job Description

The post is for six months at Homerton Healthcare with a possibility to extend to 12 months. We would welcome applications from doctors with previous experience in a wide range of specialties, although relevant experience in critical care or anaesthesia is required in order to function independently as a registrar out of hours.

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the intensive care unit, review of referrals and attendance at cardiac arrest and trauma calls, working with the duty consultant.

The Homerton Healthcare Foundation Trust is the main hospital for the London borough of Hackney and is attached to the St. Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry (part of University of London).

The hospital has approximately 500 beds at present.

The hospital provides a full range of acute services for the local populations and a range of specialist services including perinatal (level 3) NICU and high risk obstetrics, bariatric and laparoscopic surgery, stroke and neuro-rehabilitation.

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has 12 beds which can all provide Level 3 support, although Level 2 (HDU) patients are also cared for there. The intensive care team operate a closed unit policy, and provide input into all other areas of the hospital, particularly the Emergency Department.

The case mix is varied and covers complex medical, post surgical and maternal critical care. Due to the diverse population there is a wide spectrum of disease process and pathology. The pandemic has obviously brought changes to the unit and we are capable of surging up to 30 beds if required. In addition, there are significant building works planned in the near future to increase the amount of isolation rooms that we can provide and generally enhance the workplace.
