Full Job Description

We are the Defence Mental Health Services (DMHS) and we are searching for a professional, motivated Psychiatrist to join our encouraging and friendly team at RAF Brize Norton Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC). DPHC is an inclusive and dedicated organisation working hard to provide excellent care to our entitled personnel! The role of DPHC is to provide and commission a safe, effective, and efficient healthcare service for entitled personnel contributing to the maximisation of Service personnel fit for task as agreed with the Single Services. Are you confident, reliable and resourceful? So you have a good work ethic, excellent communication skills and want to deliver the best care and education to your patients? Can you bring a positive contribution to our team culture at RAF Brize Norton? If so, we would love to hear from you. This is a Fixed Term Appointment until April 2028, full time position, offering 40 hours per week. Part time hours may be available on a job share basis to meet business demands. You will feel valued as a Consultant Psychiatrist within DPHC, receiving access to outstanding rewards and employee benefits including:

  • An NHS pension
  • An inclusive working environment
  • Professional Registration Fees Re-imbursed
  • Free parking
  • Learning and development opportunities, As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for providing effective care, with an approach based on recovery and rehabilitation, to Service Personnel (SP) and entitled civilians, with timely access to skilled and effective assessment, treatment and occupational recommendations that meets the needs of the individual and the Chain of Command (CoC).
  • The team expects to receive on average 10 new referrals a week and will see urgent cases by the next working day and routine cases within 15 working days. The consultant psychiatrist is expected to carry a compact caseload of the most complex and unstable cases but will also be available at short notice to provide consultation and advice to other team members. It must be stressed that the caseload contains far lower levels of morbidity and risk than a National Health Service (NHS) general adult population and there is not a high emergency burden.

Our success depends on our people, our Whole Force, regular and reservist military, civil servants and contractors, all working as one, working together seamlessly to deliver for us. Our civil servants are a central part of this Whole Force, developing strategy, making policy, supporting ministerial decision-making and Parliamentary processes. In fact, with over 2,000 different roles working across 650 sites around the world, now really is an excellent time to join one of the largest, most exciting departments in government. The Ministry of Defence is committed to attracting and retaining people from across the full range of backgrounds and enabling flexible ways of working as the norm. We offer maternity, adoption or shared parental leave of up to 26 weeks full pay followed by 13 weeks of statutory pay and a further 13 weeks unpaid, and paternity leave of 2 weeks full pay. In return, you can expect a department that helps you learn and develop that recognises your expertise and contribution, both as an individual and part of a team. If you've ever wanted to do more, see more, go further or be better, we have roles in more professions and vocations than ever before. Let's see where your future will take you, together.
