Full Job Description

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a dynamic and motivated Consultant Paediatrician with an Epilepsy interest to join our friendly and enthusiastic team. We welcome applications from candidates with experience in Paediatric Epilepsy who are passionate about service improvement and multidisciplinary collaboration. They should also have excellent communication and teaching skills and be committed to clinical governance, innovation, quality improvements and high-quality care. Our Paediatric ward was refurbished in 2021 and we have a newly modernised Childrens Assessment Unit (CAU) located next to our Emergency Department. The Paediatric ward currently has 8 beds and CAU 9 beds. We have a level 2 Neonatal unit with 14 cots comprising of 2 ITU, 3 HDU and 9 Special care. This is a permanent post and comprises of the following: 1:10 hot ward weeks, 1:10 Neonates ward cover, 1:10 weekend on call, 1:10 on call (Monday to Thursday) resident until 22:00 hrs and then non-resident and 2 outpatient clinics a week outside of hot weeks. Paediatrics is currently supported by 11 Consultants, 1 Specialty Doctor, 2 LEDs and 10 Tier 2 doctors. The post is ideally required to commence within the next 3 months.   • To provide, with consultant colleagues, general Paediatric and Neonatal services within Barnsley Trust for the prevention, diagnosis and management of illness and the proper functioning of the department.
  • To perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances
  • Undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients (including activity data as required) in line with Trust Policy.
  • Participating in the General Paediatric and Neonatal consultant on call rotas.
  • To undertake Epilepsy Paediatric Outpatient Clinics as appropriate to the skills/interests of the post holder as agreed at Job Planning.
  • Developing and expanding epilepsy pathways, improving multidisciplinary working, and strengthening patient experience.
  • Leading and contributing to audit, guideline development, governance, and epilepsy-specific quality improvement activity.

  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a wide range of problems within acute paediatric and neonatal medicine. Range of general paediatric experience.
  • Expertise and experience of safeguarding at Specialist Registrar or Consultant level.
  • Commitment to the development and maintenance of safeguarding skills.
  • Trained to level three in safeguarding
  • Experience of formal and on the job clinical teaching.
  • Commitment to under- and post-graduate and multidisciplinary teaching and training.
  • Enthusiasm to teach clinical skills
  • Able to deliver high quality paediatric care.
  • Knowledge and experience of clinical audit.
  • Logical, analytical and self-critical approach to clinical practice.
  • Understanding of research techniques and design.
  • Ability and commitment to practice evidence based medicine.
  • Desirable
  • Specialist experience that would complement and support the current workforce.
  • Experience of report writing and giving evidence in court
  • Experience of organising teaching programs or specific teaching events.
  • Expertise in innovative teaching or training methods.
  • Postgraduate course in teaching/training (T5 or similar).
  • Expertise in Risk Management.
  • Knowledge of Every Child Matters and implications of Health and Social Care Act.
  • Published research.
  • Commitment to continuing research. Published papers in area of special interest.
  • Qualifications Essential
  • Completed CCT
  • MRCPCH or equivalent.
  • Desirable
  • Higher degree such as MD or MSc.
  • Evidence of organisational and change management skills.
