Full Job Description

The post will help to develop the regional paediatric haematology service after centralisation of services into one department based in the Great North Children's Hospital. This follows expansion of patient numbers and will allow consolidation of consultant areas of interest feeding into the stem cell transplant and cellular therapies service. Depending on the interests and expertise of the candidates this may include clinical management of patients with non-malignant conditions including haemoglobinopthies and malignant haematological disorders. Haemostasis and Thrombosis services are provided by the adult haematology team in Royal Victoria Infirmary and are not included in the paediatric haematology service.

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. The post is part of the service development to centralise and develop paediatric haematology, to consolidate expertise in the department and will focus primarily on non-malignant haematology and leukaemia. The Great North Children's Hospital provides specialist paediatric haematology across a large area encompassing the North East and North West of England with most of the care being delivered centrally. Newcastle is the regional sickle cell and haemoglobinopathy centre with a designated Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Team; it is a high prevalence area for haemoglobinopathy for pregnancy screening . Over the last five years, there has been a rapid growth in haemoglobinopathy patients within the region and referrals are continuing to rise requiring significant development of the service. We are looking for motivated individuals to help drive forward this exciting phase within paediatric haematology in Newcastle. The candidate must be able to evidence relevant expertise and training. The post is open to those who hold FRCPath (or equivalent) and have relevant paediatric experience, as well as candidates who have trained as paediatricians and can demonstrate relevant training in haematology.

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you. With around 2 million contacts with patients every year, we deliver care from:

  • Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)
  • Freeman Hospital
  • Newcastle Dental Hospital
  • Cramlington Manor Walks
  • Urgent treatment centres
  • Newcastle Fertility Centre
  • Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria
  • Northern Genetics Service
  • These include a range of flagship services which deliver cutting-edge care (supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic services in both radiology and pathology) and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS. We also have offices at Regent Point in Gosforth and community sites.
