Consultant - Paediatric Anaesthesia

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Anaesthesia.

To share with colleagues' responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Anaesthetic department.

Teaching and training of anaesthetists in training/resident doctors, and medical students where applicable.

To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.

To participate in quality improvement, data analysis and information presentation, and service development, as appropriate.

To attend care group and directorate business, operational and governance meetings as appropriate.

Fulfil duties of the weekly timetable, including any out-of-hours responsibilities.

Deliver pre-operative assessment sessions

The Hospital is a major District General Hospital; a major trauma unit, a vascular centre, with comprehensive cancer services, providing over 30,000 anaesthetics per year, and over 4000 births, with over 750 beds. We have 27 operating theatres and anaesthesia delivery areas and 18 critical care beds, and further expansion planned. There is agreed government funding for a new Women and Children's extension to the hospital to include to obstetric theatres, 2 paediatric theatres and 2 further theatres.

The surrounding countryside is renowned for its spectacular rural and coastal scenery. Cornwall is well known for its surfing beaches, coastal and inland sailing waters and numerous equestrian opportunities. The Trust (RCHT) is part of the Cornwall Healthcare Community, working in partnership with other local trusts to deliver high quality healthcare services across the county. The Trust has close links to medical specialist services in the South-West Peninsula and beyond. The Trust delivers acute medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 570000 and has a higher proportion of elderly people than the national average. The population more than doubles during the busy holiday periods.
