Main duties of the job
The Major Trauma component of the role will include running the Major Trauma service and joining the operating rota; this will be on a 1:8 basis including weekends and night care.
The Emergency General Surgery component of the role will include being responsible for the assessment and investigation of the surgical intake within the Surgical Triage Unit and delivering acute surgery to EGS patients; this will be on a 1:6 basis Monday-Thursday in day-time hours.
The Elective General Surgery component of the role will include a bi-weekly operating list and weekly clinic; this may be across all the Treatment Centre, Queens Medical Centre, Day Surgery Unit and City Hospital and some of these commitments will be in the evenings and weekends.
NUH hosts the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre (MTC), a level 1 centre covering a catchment area of 4 million people, resulting in one of the busiest MTC in the country. The bespoke 26-bedded MT unit was opened at QMC in 2012 which is run on a consultant of the week model. The unit has established strong links with the new National Rehabilitation Centre at Stanford Hall and the intention is that a new rehabilitation clinical model will deliver improved outcomes.
NUH has one of the largest emergency general surgical services in the UK and undertakes one of the largest numbers of emergency laparotomies across the UK. The service is consultant-led, supported by ACPs, Specialist Doctors and Surgical Trainees. There is 24/7 sub-specialist acute surgery in Colorectal, HPB, UGI and Major Trauma separately, whilst sharing responsibility for acute general surgery.
NUH has several teams contributing to Elective General Surgery: Upper GI, Colorectal, HPB, Endocrine and Renal Transplant. The service is supported by Consultants, Registrars and Surgical Care Practitioners.
