Consultant in Upper GI with Emergency General Surgery

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint two consultants in Upper GI Surgery to develop the Emergency General Surgery service as part of a phased expansion of the service. This is an exciting new hybrid post to support established pancreatobiliary, oesophagogastric and colorectal teams and expand and develop emergency surgical care as part of a larger general surgical team. We are looking for two keen, dynamic Consultants willing to integrate with the existing subspecialty teams of 18 surgeons who provide emergency general surgery and specialist on call for the patients of Gloucestershire. It is anticipated that the successful candidates will work with the existing teams to share the inpatient workload, provide rapid access to a senior decision maker and increase the efficiency of CEPOD lists. They will be expected to further develop ambulatory pathways and establish hot clinics to help reduce attendances on SAU. Initially they will contribute to the weekend upper GI on call rota but this is likely to change with the appointment of further surgeons into these roles. The post holders will also have an elective component to their job plan to help meet waiting list targets for general surgical procedures, particularly cholecystectomy.,

• Clinical Care: Deliver high-quality patient care, including assessment, treatment and ward rounds, and provide clinical support to junior medical and nursing staff. Participate in the agreed on-call and out-of-hours rota.
• Clinical Leadership: Provide senior clinical support and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective and coordinated care.
• Education and Training: Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and support the development of junior medical staff. Act as Educational Supervisor where agreed.
• Management: Participate in departmental and Trust meetings and contribute to service development and improvement.
• Clinical Governance: Promote evidence-based practice, follow NICE and professional guidance, and participate in clinical audit, risk management, quality improvement and management of incidents and complaints.
• Professional Development: Maintain CME/CPD and participate in annual job planning and appraisal.
• Research: Support and participate in clinical research where appropriate.
• Professional Responsibilities: Work in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and contribute effectively to team-based working
