Consultant in Paediatric Clinical Neurophysiology

This is a full-time permanent post. The post holder will be part of the Clinical Neurophysiology Department which sits within in the Brain Directorate. This is a 10 PAs post which comprises 8 PAs for direct clinical care (including an on-call commitment, currently 1 in 7) and 2 PAs for supporting professional activities (SPA). Successful candidates will be expected to provide specialist paediatric diagnostic expertise for a broad range of neurophysiology investigation.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Neurophysiology Department aims to determine the best techniques for demonstrating abnormalities of the physiology of the nervous system in children and uses these to aid diagnosis, guide treatment and inform prognosis. The major areas of activity are:

General EEG - covers referrals for conventional scalp recordings most commonly for the diagnosis and classification of seizures. Around 175 EEGs are performed per month. Around 25% of these are recordings on the Intensive Care Units. An acute diagnostic service is also provided in the Rapid Access Neurological Unit (RANU), with either extended EEG recordings or urgent NCS/EMG studies.

Prolonged EEGs - These are increasingly being conducted in ITU, ward and day case settings to capture events of interest.

Evoked potentials - Visual, somatosensory and brainstem auditory evoked potential studies are performed in both inpatient and outpatient settings for a variety of different indications.

Inpatient Telemetry - is situated on Koala ward. There are at least 4 dedicated beds.

There is also a home video telemetry (HVT) service providing diagnostic video-EEG for children in and around London which has the capacity to undertake two assessments per week.

Invasive monitoring - We usually conduct 2 SEEG cases on an average every month.
