Full Job Description
We are delighted to advertise an exciting opportunity in the newly formed department of General Internal Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. We are looking for highly motivated individuals to work in a combined role with any group 1 specialty, building a collaborative team of Consultants who will deliver a high-quality internal medicine service, alongside specialty interests in a flexible working pattern.

For their GIM responsibilities, the post holders will be responsible for inpatient care on ward 513 as the newly formed internal medicine ward, with a one in 6 pattern, including weekends. The remaining 5 weeks are flexible in working pattern and focus predominately on specialty work, with a small component of GIM activity including a weekly MDT, educational activities, monthly governance and SPA time. There is no evening or overnight on call attached to these posts, and we welcome applications from those who would like to work flexibly on non-ward weeks.
Posts can be combined with any group 1 specialty post and are therefore open to those with a dual accreditation, either CCT or via the Portfolio Pathway. We welcome applications from anyone with an interest in a combined post, who should approach the specialty clinical service lead to discuss opportunities to link specialty work high quality internal medicine care in a flexible and supportive working environment.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join a dynamic group of dual accredited Consultants, building the department of General Internal Medicine alongside specialty work. Inpatient work will be focussed around the new Internal Medicine ward with a 1:6 week and weekend frequency. The remaining 5 weeks will be predominately based in specialty work and can be tailored to the needs of the specialty department and the experience and interests of the relevant candidate.
We are searching for enthusiastic individuals who are interested in building a department of internal medicine, as well as developing specialist services in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
For their cardiology specialty responsibilities, in the 5 weeks out of 6, it is intended that the post holder will work approximately 4 PAs (direct clinical care) per week on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham site within the Heart Muscle Disease Service (including outpatient clinics, MDTs, admin, A&G) with an option to contribute 1PA to the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance service; 1 specialty PA should be used for supporting activities (audit, teaching, research, CPD).
Specialty on-call: Participation in the weekend non-invasive general cardiology consultant on-call rota may be requested (currently 1 in 28).
