Full Job Description

The successful candidate will participate in the provision of the general histopathology and cytopathology service. All Consultants report as general histopathologists and cover all specialties serviced by the department which includes non-gynae cytopathology, but not cervical cytology. The department operates a lead pathologist model for cancer MDT meetings without any subspecialisation; it is anticipated the appointee will be a general histopathologist who will develop areas of subspecialty interest taking into consideration the aspirations of the individual and departmental needs. Subspeciality interests are welcome. SHH Cellular Pathology Laboratory holds UKAS accreditation and provides comprehensive services to the population of Stockport and High Peak receiving a large and varied workload. Close working relationships with clinicians are maintained through weekly MDT meetings. Teaching and research opportunities exist with three departmental STs from Regional rotation along with two ST1's, FY2 rotation within the trust and close links with the University Of Manchester Medical School. Applicants should possess the FRCPath, or a recognised equivalent, and be in possession, or within six months, of a CCT and inclusion on the Specialist Register., The appointee will liaise in a timely manner with the Coroner, clinicians, hospital staff, consultant histopathologists/cytopathologists, and general practitioners regarding the diagnosis and management of patients, including the provision of medical advice and attendance at MDT meetings as appropriate. (ii) Laboratory The appointee will be expected to contribute to the following:

  • Day to day supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens
  • Interpretation and authorisation of results
  • Involvement in departmental policy development
  • The quality assurance performance within the department, including taking part in all relevant national external quality assurance (NEQAS) and EQA programmes
  • The maintenance of full accreditation with Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Limited and retention of the HTA licence.
  • Business planning, including the assessment and introduction of new methods and forward planning for staff and equipment requirements
