Consultant Haematologist

The post-holder will be based at SRH with some sessions at South Tyneside Hospital (STDH) and Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

The role includes:

1 in 7 attending week on-call managing the Haematology in-patients at SRH and 2 week wait referrals, liaison work and laboratory reporting

Once weekly non-resident overnight on-call

2 adult Haematology clinics per week during non-attending weeks across both sites clinics have a mix of haemato-oncology, haemostasis and thrombosis and general haematology patients

Review of patients on the day units at SRH and STDH

In-patient and out-patient chemotherapy prescribing

Advice and Guidance to GPs

1 in 3 ward round of Haematology patients admitted to STDH under Medicine (face-to-face and remote reviews)

Laboratory reporting of bone marrow biopsies

Attendance at the weekly Consultant Grand Round on B28

Attendance at the weekly MDT & involvement in the bone marrow morphology MDT on a rotating basis

Although the post is a full-time post, applicants who wish to work less than full-time are encouraged to apply. The post holder should possess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and be on the GMC Full Specialist Register with a License to Practice. Our team comprises 7 Consultants employed by South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) and an 8th Consultant employed by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Gateshead.

In-patient work at Sunderland Royal Hospital (SRH) includes the delivery of acute leukaemia induction and managing patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation. We provide non-malignant paediatric Haematology clinics and a Teenage & Young Adult (TYA) service for malignant disorders, working closely with the regional centre in Newcastle.
