Full Job Description

The Consultant Dermatologist will provide clinical leadership and specialist dermatology services within a Consultant-led Community Dermatology Service. The post holder will assess, diagnose, treat and manage adult patients with a wide range of dermatological conditions, delivering high-quality care in accordance with NICE guidance, British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) standards, NHS constitutional requirements and locally commissioned service specifications. The post holder will provide expert clinical oversight for multidisciplinary staff, support referral triage and Advice & Guidance services, undertake dermatological procedures, contribute to service development and ensure patients receive timely, safe and effective care closer to home. The service is required to be Consultant-led with a named Consultant Dermatologist responsible for clinical governance and service oversight.,

  • Deliver consultant-led outpatient dermatology clinics for adults aged 18 years and over.
  • Provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of dermatological conditions.
  • Deliver one-stop assessment and treatment wherever clinically appropriate.
  • Manage patients with conditions including:
  • + Eczema + Psoriasis + Dermatitis + Acne + Lichen planus + Urticaria + Fungal infections + Hair, scalp and nail disorders + Genital dermatology + Premalignant skin lesions + Low-risk basal cell carcinomas in accordance with NICE guidance. [Dermatolog...tion final | PDF]
  • Perform dermatological procedures including:
  • + Skin biopsies + Cryotherapy + Minor skin surgery + Lesion assessment and management + Dermoscopy/dermatoscopy.
  • Prescribe treatments in accordance with national guidance, local formularies and medicines-management policies.
  • Retain responsibility for Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) prescribing in line with MHRA requirements.
  • Ensure informed consent is obtained and documented for all procedures.
  • Provide follow-up care based on clinical need and support Patient Initiated Follow-Up (PIFU) pathways where appropriate., Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Responsibilities
  • The post holder will:

  • Referral Management and Clinical Triage The Consultant Dermatologist will:
  • Provide front-end clinical triage of referrals received via NHS e-Referral Service (eRS).
  • Deliver specialist Advice and Guidance services to primary care clinicians.
  • Support virtual consultations and teledermatology pathways.
  • Identify and expedite urgent referrals requiring secondary care review.
  • Ensure suspected cancer referrals are escalated immediately through appropriate Two Week Wait pathways.
  • Support referral optimisation and reduction of unnecessary outpatient attendance.
  • Leadership and Clinical Governance The post holder will:
  • Act as a named Consultant Dermatologist for the service.
  • Provide clinical leadership across community dermatology services.
  • Maintain oversight of governance, patient safety and quality standards.
  • Participate in incident investigation, learning reviews and risk management processes.
  • Ensure compliance with:
  • + NICE Guidance + BAD Standards + GMC Good Medical Practice + NHS Constitution + Local ICB policies.
  • Contribute to annual governance reporting and quality assurance activities.

    Detailed knowledge of NICE guidance and BAD standards.
  • Understanding of NHS outpatient transformation programmes.
  • Knowledge of referral optimisation and PIFU pathways.
  • Understanding of skin cancer pathways and MDT processes.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding legislation and requirements., Knowledge of Integrated Care Systems and community-based service delivery models., Excellent diagnostic and clinical decision-making ability.
  • Ability to independently manage complex dermatology presentations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to teach and mentor healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to analyse clinical data and drive quality improvement., Experience in service development and commissioning environments.
  • Digital health and telemedicine expertise., Medical Degree (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent).
  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Dermatology, or within six months of anticipated entry at interview date.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent postgraduate medical qualification.
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD)., Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education, Leadership or Management.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians., Significant experience as a Consultant Dermatologist or equivalent specialist level.
  • Experience managing a broad spectrum of dermatological conditions.
  • Experience in skin surgery, biopsies and cryotherapy.
  • Experience providing consultant-led outpatient services.
  • Experience in clinical governance, audit and service improvement.
  • Experience supervising multidisciplinary teams., Community Dermatology service experience.
  • Teledermatology experience.
  • Experience delivering Advice and Guidance services.
  • Experience of NHS commissioned community pathways., Ability to travel between service locations.
  • Satisfactory DBS clearance.
  • Evidence of annual appraisal and revalidation.
