Full Job Description
The post-holder's duties will be primarily at the Oxford site, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations: John Radcliffe, Churchill and Horton Hospitals and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre., Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holders will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder's contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. Clinical Governance The post-holders will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. Personal and Professional Development The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs. Management The post-holders will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. They will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
- Medical qualification acceptable by the GMC
- GMC specialist registration or within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC's specialist register or equivalent training and experience by the closing date of the application
- Minimum 6 months experience in Anaesthesia in the UK in the NHS
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) or equivalent
- CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent Desirable criteria
- Possession of other related postgraduate qualifications such as MD, BSc, MSc or PHD
- Additional advanced training or fellowship in a relevant sub-specialty
- Life support courses instructor, e.g. APLS/EPALs etc, To be able to work independently at consultant level in paediatric anaesthesia and perform as a member of a team
- Experience in anaesthesia for neonatal surgery with evidence of advanced training
- To be able to manage neonatal emergency surgery confidently and independently
- Minimum of 12 months advanced specialist paediatric anaesthesia training as a senior trainee or post-CCT fellow, or equivalent
- Minimum of 3 months experience in paediatric or neonatal critical care or transport services
- Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems Desirable criteria
- Experience in anaesthesia for paediatric spinal surgery
- Consultant level experience in paediatric and neonatal anaesthesia, Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions and exert appropriate authority
- Effective administration and time management skills
- Training in clinical management
- Knowledge of the NHS and the role of clinical networks
- Understanding of the complexities of performing in a regional paediatric referral centre
- Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
- Able to communicate in English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training
- Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit as well as quality improvement activities
- Ability to peer review clinical research and participate in anaesthetic research activities Desirable criteria
- Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital
- Leadership and management qualification
- Experience of NHS management projects and effecting change
- Knowledge of finance / budgets
- Willingness to undertake additional roles at local, regional and national levels

- Evidence of leading audits/QI projects, implementing change and monitoring compliance

This post is suitable for a candidate with an interest in anaesthesia for paediatric surgery and neonatal surgery.
