Full Job Description
This is a hands-on role where you will contribute directly to maintaining and improving public spaces, ensuring they are clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone. You will play a key role in delivering essential environmental, highways, and grounds maintenance services, working across a variety of locations and adapting to seasonal demands., As a Community Operative, your duties will include:
- Carrying out grass cutting, hedge trimming, strimming, and weed control
- Street cleaning activities including sweeping, litter picking, fly-tip removal, and emptying bins
- Assisting with grave digging and maintenance of cemeteries
- Supporting seasonal planting, bedding, pruning, and general horticultural work
- Cleaning signs, bollards, and removing graffiti
- Assisting with pothole repairs and minor highways maintenance
- Participating in winter maintenance operations such as snow clearing, gritting, and de-icing
- Safely operating hand tools, light plant, and specialist equipment
- Driving vehicles (including light and specialist vehicles such as tractors and ride-on mowers where qualified)
- Carrying out pre-use vehicle and equipment checks and maintaining accurate records
- Transporting tools and equipment between sites
- Erecting appropriate signage and barriers to ensure public safety
- Completing all required documentation including timesheets, inspection logs, and task records
- Reporting issues and contributing to the continuous improvement of the local area
- Working collaboratively within a team to ensure daily work targets are achieved Depending on your experience and qualifications, you may also:
- Drive Category C (LGV) vehicles and support winter maintenance shifts
- Take on supervisory responsibilities, including allocating and checking team work, This is a physically demanding, outdoor role that involves working in varying weather conditions. Tasks may include manual handling, operating machinery, and working on public highways and open spaces. Full training, PPE, and health surveillance are provided to ensure your safety and wellbeing. - Have experience in grounds maintenance, construction, horticulture, or street cleansing
- Are physically fit and capable of manual work, including lifting and walking long distances
- Can safely operate tools, machinery, and vehicles
- Have a good understanding of health and safety practices
- Possess strong teamwork and communication skills
- Are able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to customer service
- A full UK driving licence (Category B) is essential. Additional qualifications such as LGV (Category C), horticultural certifications, or plant operation licences are advantageous.
