Job Overview
As the Commercial Capability Manager, your primary responsibility is to develop and embed a full capability framework covering competencies, training, development, and mentoring. You will identify and evaluate skill gaps within Commercial areas and implement training programs to bridge those gaps. Collaborating with department heads, you will understand the specific knowledge and expertise required for each role and develop tailored development plans. This role reports to the Senior Capability Manager.
Working Pattern and Environment
We operate a 9-day working fortnight, with every other Friday off. This role is eligible for hybrid working, typically spending three days on-site during a long week and two in a short week. Flexible working arrangements, including part-time and varied hours, are supported.
Key Accountabilities
- Manage and foster effective relationships with external governing bodies (MOD, DNO, CAB), providing visibility and influencing changes and collaboration opportunities across government commercial skills and development.
- Define the Commercial competency framework and career pathways.
- Develop and manage Commercial training plans and oversee associated training providers, ensuring effective utilization of AWE training resources.
- Collaborate with AWE HR and talent teams to align employee development processes, tools, and procedures.
- Manage the Commercial skills and development program and budget.
- Assess capability development demand and understand market trends related to people development and capability.
- Analyze skills gaps and develop/implement plans to address them across Commercial.
- Implement a Commercial mentoring program to nurture and develop internal talent.
Candidate Profile
We seek candidates with proven professional experience, ideally in a Procurement or Commercial function, or within HR with a focus on skills and development. The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence decision making.
- Ability to work in a domain with ambiguity and shifting priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong management, analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Attention to detail and capacity to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to engage colleagues across teams and levels of seniority collaboratively.

Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we'd like you to have experience in some of the following: Must have proven professional experience. Experience of working in a Procurement / Commercial function. Experience within HR or other people related functions with specific experience in skills and development. Highly skilled in stakeholder
management, with ability to deploy effective tools and strategies to create business alignment and influence decision making. Comfortable with a degree of ambiguity and changing priorities. Excellent written and verbal communication and stakeholder management skills. Strong management skills. Good analytical skills. Strong proficiency within the Microsoft suite including excel.
