Working Pattern
AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight, with every other Friday as a non-working day. This role is eligible for hybrid working, meaning employees typically spend three days on site in a long week and two days on site in a short week. Role Overview
As the Commercial Capability Manager, your primary responsibility is to develop and embed a full capability framework covering competencies, training, development, and mentoring. You will need to identify and evaluate skill gaps within Commercial and implement training programmes to bridge those gaps. You will work closely with department heads to understand the specific knowledge and expertise required for each role and develop tailored development plans. This role will report into the Senior Capability Manager.
Key Accountabilities
- Managing and fostering effective relationships with external governing bodies, providing visibility and influence of any change (MOD, DNO, CAB) and identifying opportunities for collaboration across government commercial skills and development.
- Defining the Commercial competency framework and career pathways.
- Managing Commercial training plans and associated training providers, ensuring AWE training providers are fully leveraged.
- Collaborating with wider AWE HR and talent teams to ensure full alignment with employee development processes, tools, and procedures.
- Managing the Commercial skills and development programme and budget.
- Understanding capability development demand and market trends across people development to define Commercial requirements.
- Analyzing skills gaps and developing plans to bridge these gaps across Commercial.
- Rolling out a Commercial mentoring programme to nurture and develop internal talent.
Candidate Requirements
While not exhaustive, the ideal candidate will have experience in some of the following:
- Proven professional experience in relevant fields.
- Experience working in a Procurement / Commercial function.
- Experience within HR or other people-related functions with a focus on skills and development.
- Highly skilled in stakeholder management, with effective tools and strategies for business alignment and influencing decision-making.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and changing priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong management and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in the Microsoft suite, including Excel.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Attention to detail and ability to engage colleagues across different teams and seniority levels.
- Collaborative working style.
