Full Job Description
As a co-opted governor, you will be appointed because of the skills, experience, or perspective you can bring to the governing body. You do not need previous governance experience-full induction and ongoing training will be provided. What Does the Local Governing Body Do? Local Governing Bodies play a vital strategic role within academy schools. They:
- Provide strategic oversight and challenge to ensure high standards of education
- Hold school leaders to account for educational performance, safeguarding, and wellbeing
- Help set the vision, values, and culture of the school
- Support and monitor policies, behaviour, inclusion, and community engagement
- Act as a critical friend, balancing support with robust questioning
- Represent the interests of pupils, parents, staff, and the local community The LGB does not manage the school day-to-day; instead, it focuses on the bigger picture-ensuring the school continues to improve and thrive. How Governors Benefit the School By bringing a range of skills and viewpoints, governors help the school to:
- Make better-informed strategic decisions
- Strengthen accountability and transparency
- Improve outcomes for pupils
- Ensure resources are used effectively
- Maintain strong links with families and the local community Your contribution will directly support the quality of education and opportunities available to our children. We welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds. Skills and experience that are especially valuable include (but are not limited to):
- Education, early years, or SEND
- Finance, HR, legal, or business, Health & Safety
- Community work, health, or public services
- Data analysis or strategic planning, IT and AI Most importantly, you should have:
- A commitment to children and young people
- An interest in education
- A willingness to ask questions and work as part of a team Time Commitment
- Typically 6 governing body meetings per year (usually evenings)
- Occasional school visits and training sessions
