Full Job Description

As a co-opted governor, you will be appointed because of the skills, experience, or perspective you can bring to the governing body. You do not need previous governance experience-full induction and ongoing training will be provided. What Does the Local Governing Body Do? Local Governing Bodies play a vital strategic role within academy schools. They:

  • Provide strategic oversight and challenge to ensure high standards of education
  • Hold school leaders to account for educational performance, safeguarding, and wellbeing
  • Help set the vision, values, and culture of the school
  • Support and monitor policies, behaviour, inclusion, and community engagement
  • Act as a critical friend, balancing support with robust questioning
  • Represent the interests of pupils, parents, staff, and the local community
  • The LGB does not manage the school day-to-day; instead, it focuses on the bigger picture-ensuring the school continues to improve and thrive. How Governors Benefit the School By bringing a range of skills and viewpoints, governors help the school to:
  • Make better-informed strategic decisions
  • Strengthen accountability and transparency
  • Improve outcomes for pupils
  • Ensure resources are used effectively
  • Maintain strong links with families and the local community
  • Your contribution will directly support the quality of education and opportunities available to our children. We welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds. Skills and experience that are especially valuable include (but are not limited to):
  • Education, early years, or SEND
  • Finance, HR, legal, or business, Health & Safety
  • Community work, health, or public services
  • Data analysis or strategic planning, IT and AI
  • Most importantly, you should have:
  • A commitment to children and young people
  • An interest in education
  • A willingness to ask questions and work as part of a team
  • Time Commitment
  • Typically 6 governing body meetings per year (usually evenings)
  • Occasional school visits and training sessions
  • The term of office is usually four years
