Full Job Description

We are looking for a Cornea Fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, based at Yeovil District Hospital & Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton. The post-holder will join a dynamic team of Cornea consultants to support the development of a countywide Cornea services. The Department of Ophthalmology provides a comprehensive ophthalmology service to the population of West Dorset and Somerset. Ophthalmic surgery is undertaken in Modular Theatres at YDH and the Ophthalmic Theatre Suite at MPH. Acute services are based at both sites although out of hours ophthalmology services are available only at MPH. There is a well-established Consultant led and delivered Cornea service based at MPH and a new Consultant led Cornea service based at YDH. This post holder must have a car and a valid driving licence for the UK. Main duties of the job To work closely with the Cornea Consultants across both sites To participate in patient handovers between teams To maintain responsibility for out-patient, inpatient and surgical care of Cornea patients To provide advice, guidance and clinical supervision of resident doctors and specialty doctors To support the development and expansion of the Cornea Service (clinical audit, submissions to the Drugs and Therapeutic committee, business case submission, quality improvement projects) Participation in provision of General and acute Ophthalmology To demonstrate a high level of professionalism with both staff and patients While not required to participate in an on-call rota to provide emergency cover, you may in exceptional circumstances be asked you to return to site for emergencies Maintain statutory and mandatory training compliance and participate in appraisal and job-planning About us At Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, we're committed to supporting our employees with a range of benefits designed to enhance your professional and personal life.   • GMC registration
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Clinical training and breadth of experience equivalent to that of a senior resident in Ophthalmology
  • Desirable
  • Fellowship in cornea, external eye disease, cataract surgery
  • Experience Essential
  • Competent cataract surgeon with audited results of surgical outcomes
  • Desirable
  • Experience in managing Cornea patients, including acute condition and post-op care
  • Experience with refractive procedures
  • Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • GMC registration
