Full Job Description

The Department of Gastroenterology offers exposure to the regional intestinal failure service, experience in working in complex inflammatory bowel disease and in luminal research. The clinical aspect of the post can be tailored to the needs of the post-holder with the aim to provide 2 outpatient clinics per week, seeing both new and follow up patients (inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition and general luminal gastroenterology), supervised by a consultant from the gastrointestinal team. A regular endoscopy list will also be timetabled with additional endoscopy experience available via the daily acute GI bleed lists and adhoc inpatient lists. The remaining clinical time will be spent supporting inpatient work in gastroenterology., All job descriptions are subject to review. Post holders are expected to be flexible and be prepared to carry out any similar or related duties which do not fall within the work outlined. The Line Manager, in consultation with the post holder will undertake any review. The NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (the NHS KSF) defines and describes the knowledge and skills which NHS staff need to apply in their work in order to deliver quality services. It provides a consistent, comprehensive and explicit framework on which to base review and development for all staff. Closely aligned with this job description is a KSF profile supporting the effective learning and development of the post holder in a variety of ways.

  • Registered with General Medical Council (UK)
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Advanced Life Support provider
  • Previous experience of working in in the British NHS Healthcare system (not observing) and completion of CT1/CT2/IMT training
  • Desirable
  • Other membership, fellowship or diplomas
  • Knowledge and Experience Essential
  • Gastroenterology experience
  • Able to assess, initially resuscitate and stabilise acutely sick patients
  • Able to lead cardiac arrest team
  • Training /experience in Respiratory Failure and management of patients on NIV/CPAP
  • Understands audit and governance processes
  • Desirable
  • Research experience, Ability to organise and prioritise workload
  • Good communication skills
  • Honesty and reliability
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Flexibility
  • A willingness to undertake additional clinical duties when necessary, including cover for colleagues on leave

    This post is a full time, fixed term appointment at SpR level in Luminal Gastroenterology and General Medicine at the Bristol Royal infirmary. The post is initially for a 12-14 month period, with the option to extend if appropriate and assuming progress is satisfactory.
  • The successful applicant will join a dynamic gastroenterology team, working clinically to support both inpatient and outpatient work. There will also be the opportunity to work in luminal research via established research links with the University of Bristol.
