Full Job Description
The appointee will provide anaesthesia for routine cases alongside consultants or associate specialists and may run lists under remote supervision based on experience. Duties include working in the Labour ward under consultant supervision and providing resident on-call cover, including obstetrics and paediatric resuscitation.
The anaesthesia department has a 2-tier junior resident on-call rota: one specialist grade/registrar tier covering Labour ward 24/7 and another covering paediatric resuscitation, pain block service, and emergency theatre (22:00-08:00). Only life- or limb-threatening cases are operated on after 22:00. Consultants support registrars on-site until 22:00 and are available off-site with a 30-minute response time. Rarely, ICU support may be required.
Daily sessions start at 08:00. On-call duties are 1:10 for paediatric resuscitation and 1:7 for obstetrics. Shifts include short days (08:00-18:00), long days (08:00-20:30), and night shifts (20:00-08:30). There is no ICU commitment.
The department supports junior anaesthetists in their training towards national schemes or CESR and offers a robust education programme, with regular clinical governance meetings and opportunities for managerial and educational involvement.
The post holder will work independently within their competencies, seeking senior support as needed. They will collaborate with clinical colleagues and nursing staff to optimize resource use and contribute to clinical governance and quality enhancement projects. Flexibility is required to undertake various clinical tasks as directed. They must actively engage in teaching, training, supervision, and development of clinical guidelines, audits, and CPD activities.
Responsibilities include participation in departmental teaching programs, audits, and ongoing medical education per Royal College and GMC guidelines. They will also train junior anaesthetists, medical students, nurses, and paramedics, obtaining accreditation for clinical and educational supervision.
The role involves identifying service concerns, being open to policy changes, contributing to consultations, and suggesting process improvements while adhering to Trust policies.
The department provides educational opportunities, including weekly CPD meetings and bi-monthly clinical governance and audit sessions. In emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, the post holder may be required to perform additional duties, though efforts will be made to ensure compliance with the European Working Time Directive.
