Full Job Description

We are seeking to appoint 4 Clinical Education Fellows in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. During this 12 month programme, we aim to provide the opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and experience for successful applications to Core Surgical Training or ST3 via CREST with a completed PG Cert in Medical Education.

The successful candidate(s) will spend 50% of their time in clinical work including on call, ward and theatre work at an appropriate level. The remaining 50% of the time includes delivery of a teaching programme, experience of clinical supervision, CV building, logbook development and prepping applications for CST or ST3 (via CREST). The role includes an on-call full shift (band 2B during clinical block). Study leave is factored into the teaching block (can be taken during clinical block for clinical time in lieu). Annual leave should be taken in equal proportion between the clinical and teaching blocks.

These posts have been created to give trainees the opportunity to spend time learning about T&O, and to allow the candidate to develop their own skills in training and medical education and the opportunity to enrol on and have funding for the Medical Education PG Cert Teaching & Learning for Health Professionals (TLHP) at the University of Bristol. The posts are for trainees who have completed foundation training and are aiming for CST or ST3.

Applicants we consider appointable may be offered alternative Fellow posts if insufficient posts are available., The clinical role involves working in the department of T&O in the adult trauma unit and paediatric major trauma unit as part of the Southwest trauma network. The unit has completed a move to new dedicated T&O wards and undergone a major refurbishment of the department junior staff offices, MDT room and outpatient clinic. The unit has 18 consultants, 12 specialist registrars, 3 core surgical trainees and 6 foundation 1 and 2 doctors as well as a clinical research fellow, limb reconstruction fellow and upper limb fellow. The BRI is a Trauma unit and receives referrals from across the region for complex T&O reconstruction of the upper and lower limbs and the BCH is a paediatric Major Trauma Centre.

The teaching role is well supported by the Director of Medical Education and the Division of Surgery and the role is open for development according to the needs of the successful candidate. The trust hosts medical students, foundation doctors and core trainees, the Bristol Simulation Centre and The Versalius Clinical Teaching Unit.

The Clinical Education Fellow will also act as supervisor to the incoming rotating FY1s, Undergraduate Physician Associates and Clinical Practitioners. They will be responsible for overseeing the acquisition of the required clinical competencies for their named trainee/s during the placement. They will be required to participate in medical students' education., welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
