Full Job Description

As Chair of the Finance & Resources Committee, you will play a key role in supporting the Board to ensure strong financial stewardship and effective governance during a period of transition and opportunity. Working closely with the Chair, Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer, you will provide strategic oversight and constructive challenge, helping to shape long-term sustainability and organisational direction. You will be joining an organisation with strong financial and operational foundations, supported by an experienced executive team, an established finance function and a well-developed governance structure. You will chair the Finance & Resources Committee, providing financial oversight and supporting governance across risk, financial planning and sustainability. You will contribute to board discussions and strategic decision-making, while building effective relationships with fellow Trustees and the executive team.

We are seeking a credible and collaborative individual who brings strategic financial insight, sound judgement and a calm, assured presence. You do not need to be a qualified accountant, but you will bring the confidence to engage with financial information and support balanced, well-informed decision-making. We are particularly interested in individuals with senior leadership experience in complex organisations who bring strong strategic financial understanding and the ability to interpret and challenge information constructively. You will have experience contributing to governance, risk or strategic decision-making, alongside a collaborative and credible approach, with the emotional intelligence to influence and build effective relationships. A genuine commitment to the mission of Carers UK is essential. We would especially welcome applications from individuals with lived experience of caring, or a strong understanding of carers' experiences. If you share our passion for improving the lives of carers and are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to our organisation, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Carers UK is the national charity for unpaid carers, supporting over 5.8 million people across the UK who care for loved ones who are older, disabled or seriously ill. At a time when the number of unpaid carers continues to grow and the challenges they face become increasingly complex, our role has never been more vital. We are ambitious for the future, both in terms of the impact we deliver for carers and how we continue to strengthen and evolve as an organisation. Drawing on over 60 years at the forefront of the carers' movement, we combine national influence with practical support; working across policy, research and partnerships while ensuring carers can access the advice, information and connections they need. We are currently developing a new five-year strategy, alongside welcoming new Trustees and navigating a period of governance transition. This next phase reflects a changing external environment, including increasing demand for care, demographic shifts and ongoing pressures within health and social care systems. Within this context, this is a pivotal governance appointment, offering the opportunity to operate at board level; shaping strategic direction, strengthening financial oversight and ensuring Carers UK remains sustainable and impactful for the future., Placing purpose and quality before profit, Peridot Partners is a values-led third sector executive recruitment agency transforming leadership and inspiring change with organisations that have a social purpose. Diversity at our heart We do not believe in throwaway statements about diversity. Instead, diversity is at the heart of everything we do and is crucial to our success, reputation, and the organisations and people we work with. We understand that it is not good enough to simply not discriminate and we must do more to create positive change. With this in mind, we are proud that we have been actively working to become an Anti-Racist and more inclusive organisation. We recognise that unconscious bias exists and must be minimised. We have put processes in place to manage them. We have a position of influence as a recruitment company to make our positive contribution to change the systems that perpetuate discrimination, and with that comes a responsibility to do better. We work tirelessly to ensure we lead inclusive campaigns and projects that can encourage all members of society to apply and know that they will be treated with decency and respect. We support equal opportunities in employment and oppose all forms of unlawful or unfair discrimination based on gender, age, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual orientation or disability. We believe that a diverse not for profit sector will provide better leadership to accelerate positive change in society. We are proud to have an exceptional track record of leading inclusive recruitment campaigns that enhance diversity of leadership teams and boards. As a recruitment partner, you can expect us to:
  • Constructively challenge you if you have exclusive and restrictive criteria in your role profiles.
  • Ensure the advertising materials for your role use inclusive language and imagery.
  • Promote your role within sector-specific networking forums wherever possible (e.g. women, global ethnic majority, disabled and LGBTQIA+ networks).
  • Put diversity at the heart of the projects we are undertaking when talking to your staff and board to ensure we are reflecting the people and communities you work with and for.
  • Challenge inappropriate behaviour, practice and comments where required.
  • Make reasonable adjustments as needed.
  • Our commitment to building diverse organisations starts with us, and we are proud that women, LGBTQ+, disabled and people from ethnic minorities consider Peridot a great place to work.
