Full Job Description

We're seeking a dynamic, relational Chair or Co-Chairs to lead the Board of Chapter, a radical international cultural hub and civic space at the heart of Cardiff., We're currently seeking an experienced and visionary leader to succeed our outgoing Chair and guide the Board of Trustees through a period of transformational change. This is a pivotal moment to join an organisation that welcomes approximately half a million visitors annually and commissions thought-provoking multidisciplinary art that challenges the status quo. The Chair/Co-Chairs will provide critical non-executive leadership, ensuring that strategic decisions align with our core values of equity, radical thought and experimentation. This role is an opportunity to steer and support a prestigious organisation during a time of both challenge and immense creative potential. Help us reimagine our future and foster a safe, convivial space for everyone to dream and practice new futures together.

The successful candidate will be an experienced, inspiring leader capable of convening diverse voices to navigate the complexities of the current arts funding landscape. You will have a high level of personal integrity and a brave approach to social justice. We're looking for an individual deeply passionate about the power of art to build community cohesion and who believes that social justice should be central to all organisational practice. Whether you have an established background in the creative, public, or charity sectors, your ability to leverage personal networks for the collective benefit of the organisation will be essential. Additionally, you will have strong financial and commercial acumen with the ability to manage risk and liability, alongside an understanding of charity governance and legal duties.

Founded by artists and writers over five decades ago, Chapter remains a vital catalyst for creativity and critical thinking in Wales. We're a multidisciplinary cultural centre featuring a contemporary gallery, two cinemas, two theatres, a café bar, over 50 artists' studios, community spaces and a vibrant garden. Our building is a bustling civic hub, alive from early morning until late at night with people visiting free exhibitions, attending workshops, watching a film or performance, or simply connecting over a cup of tea. Our ethos is rooted in prioritising social and cultural equity through a collaborative approach. We advocate for artists and communities as 'world builders', ensuring our programme is informed by the 'needs of now'. Over the last three years, we've intentionally re-centred our local community at the heart of our venue, ensuring it remains a safe and inclusive space for marginalised perspectives. By fostering dialogue through shared histories and imagined futures, we continue to be an essential international centre that remains deeply embedded in the unique cultural fabric of Cardiff and Wales. We're proud to be the lead organisation for Film Hub Wales and a Real Living Wage Employer, managing a group turnover of approximately £3.5 million., Placing purpose and quality before profit, Peridot Partners is a values-led third sector executive recruitment agency transforming leadership and inspiring change with organisations that have a social purpose. • Be brave - We champion and challenge in our own individual ways to improve outcomes for ourselves and our clients.

We develop long-term, deep-rooted relationships that bring real value to our partners across socially focused sectors. Diversity at our heart We do not believe in throwaway statements about diversity. Instead, diversity is at the heart of everything we do and is crucial to our success, reputation, and the organisations and people we work with. We understand that it is not good enough to simply not discriminate and we must do more to create positive change. With this in mind, we are proud that we have been actively working to become an Anti-Racist and more inclusive organisation. We recognise that unconscious bias exists and must be minimised. We have put processes in place to manage them. We have a position of influence as a recruitment company to make our positive contribution to change the systems that perpetuate discrimination, and with that comes a responsibility to do better. We work tirelessly to ensure we lead inclusive campaigns and projects that can encourage all members of society to apply and know that they will be treated with decency and respect. We support equal opportunities in employment and oppose all forms of unlawful or unfair discrimination based on gender, age, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual orientation or disability. We believe that a diverse not for profit sector will provide better leadership to accelerate positive change in society. We are proud to have an exceptional track record of leading inclusive recruitment campaigns that enhance diversity of leadership teams and boards. As a recruitment partner, you can expect us to:
  • Constructively challenge you if you have exclusive and restrictive criteria in your role profiles.
  • Ensure the advertising materials for your role use inclusive language and imagery.
  • Promote your role within sector-specific networking forums wherever possible (e.g. women, global ethnic majority, disabled and LGBTQIA+ networks).
  • Put diversity at the heart of the projects we are undertaking when talking to your staff and board to ensure we are reflecting the people and communities you work with and for.
  • Challenge inappropriate behaviour, practice and comments where required.
  • Make reasonable adjustments as needed.
  • Our commitment to building diverse organisations starts with us, and we are proud that women, LGBTQ+, disabled and people from ethnic minorities consider Peridot a great place to work.
