Position Details College of Medicine and Health - University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK. Full-time, fixed-term contract until August 2027. Grade: 7. Salary range: £36,636 - £46,049, with potential progression to £48,822. Benefits

- Flexible working arrangements Background Students in professional healthcare programmes must demonstrate professional standards to be fit to practise. The College must manage academic appeals and Fitness to Practise referral cases, preventing legal repercussions and ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies. Role Summary The Case Manager will lead a team, manage complex cases, and enhance the student experience through proactive services and guidance. Responsibilities Investigations
- Facilitate thorough investigations and prepare detailed reports in collaboration with Investigating Officers.
- Coordinate with the University's Legal Services for complex cases.
- Compile, check, and index case files to ensure completeness. Hearings and Appeals
- Provide professional support and advice for Fitness to Practice Hearings, using detailed knowledge of procedures and regulatory guidance.
- Exercise professional judgement to guide decisions.
- Manage interview processes for witnesses and students.
- Prepare and brief witnesses and students for hearings.
- Ensure hearing outcomes are actioned and followed through.
- Record and monitor appeal progress, reporting to the Head of Operations.
- Maintain accurate case records and provide management information to the University and relevant regulatory bodies.
- Ensure safe suspension of study when required, working with stakeholders.
- Act as Secretary to College and University Misconduct and Fitness to Practise Committees, writing notes and follow-up letters. Quality Assurance and Training
- Develop and implement quality assurance mechanisms that meet University and PSRB standards.
- Design and deliver training materials and briefings for academic and clinical colleagues involved in Fitness to Practise activities.
- Review and update procedures, guidance, and templates to reflect regulatory changes.
- Collaborate with senior colleagues to ensure procedures are legally sound and transparent. General

- Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) plus relevant practical experience.
- Ability to review and understand multiple regulatory frameworks and implement complex procedures.
- Knowledge of external legislation (GDPR, Equality Act, Human Rights Act).
- Excellent organisational, communication and relationship-building skills.
- Highly developed written communication skills for drafting guidance, reports and correspondence.
- Negotiation and influence skills.
- Experience in a compliance-based organisation.
- Experience sourcing, analysing and reporting on management data.
- Conceptual and analytical problem-solving ability.
- Strong confidentiality practices.
- Understanding of the Equality Act 2010 protected characteristics and fairness in daily activity.
