Job Description

Master your craft and learn to use it all over the world. As a full-time soldier, entry-level Carpenter in the British Army, you'll:

• Plan carpentry and joinery tasks from sketches and apply them in field


• Learn to use and maintain workshop machinery


• Prepare timber for use, manufacture joints, use adhesives, produce windows, door frames and fitments


• Carry out general construction work including first-fix timber frames and second-fix joinery fitments


• Construct scaffolding, interpret scaffold terms and erect access scaffold and install ladders


• Install partitions, floors, roofing, timber-framed buildings, formwork and shoring


• Study for carpentry qualifications (including Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joining (Military Engineering) and Level 2 apprenticeship)

Qualifications

• Be between 16 years 6 months and 35 years 6 months


• Have a GCSE Grade A-C/9-5 or Scottish National 5 in Maths, English Language and one other subject


• Be able to pass a basic fitness test

Training steps include:

• Step 1: Initial military training teaching you how to be a soldier – basic military training if you're a Junior Soldier, adult basic training if you're a Regular Soldier.


• Step 2: 12 weeks at the Royal School of Military Engineering learning military engineering skills including demolition and bridge building.


• Step 3: 21 weeks of carpentry training using machinery and hand tools to create timber building materials.
