Position Details

The Army United Kingdom offers a yearly salary of £27,282 (after training). Master your craft and learn to use it all over the world. As a full-time soldier, an entry-level Carpenter in the British Army, you'll:

• Plan carpentry and joinery tasks from sketches and apply them in the field


• Learn to use and maintain workshop machinery


• Prepare timber for use, manufacture joints, use adhesives, produce windows, door frames, and fitments


• Carry out general construction work including first-fix timber frames and second-fix joinery fitments


• Construct scaffolding, interpret scaffold terms, erect access scaffolds, and install ladders


• Install partitions, floors, roofing, timber-framed buildings, formwork, and shoring


• Study for carpentry qualifications (including Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joining (Military Engineering) and Level 2 apprenticeship)

Qualifications Needed

• Be between 16 years 6 months and 35 years 6 months


• Have a GCSE Grade A-C/9-5 or Scottish National 5 in Maths, English Language, and one other subject


• Be able to pass a basic fitness test

Initial military training will teach you how to be a soldier, including basic military training if you're a Junior Soldier and adult basic training if you're a Regular Soldier. Following this, you will attend 12 weeks at the Royal School of Military Engineering to learn military engineering skills such as demolition and bridge building. Subsequently, you will undertake 21 weeks of carpentry training, including using machinery and hand tools to produce timber building materials.
