Full Job Description
As a Broadcast Engineering Trainer, you will play an important part in keeping the BBC on air by developing the next generation of broadcast engineers. You will work with a wide range of broadcasting technologies across TV, Radio and Online, and you will help learners build the practical skills needed to operate, maintain and support the BBC's production and distribution systems.
Based at Wood Norton, you will work closely with a highly experienced team who use cutting edge equipment to deliver high quality training. You will contribute to the full training lifecycle from planning and design to delivery, assessment and ongoing support. You will also help strengthen how we work by refreshing course content, introducing new ideas and maintaining high technical standards across all training activity.

This role sits within the BBC Academy Delivery Team, a group dedicated to developing the skills that support the BBC's creative, editorial and technical excellence. As part of this, the Broadcast Engineering Training team at Wood Norton plays a unique role in strengthening the technical capability behind the BBC's TV, Radio and Online services.

You will be part of a team that values curiosity, professional growth and high technical standards, and you will work alongside experts who are passionate about raising capability right across the BBC. Being part of the Academy Delivery Team means contributing to the wider mission of equipping BBC staff with the skills they need to innovate, adapt and deliver world-class content., Deliver high quality technical training across a range of broadcast engineering subjects, including Audio and TV fundamentals, IP and networking, and studio or gallery operations.
Prepare and set up equipment, facilities and training spaces to ensure courses run smoothly and to a high standard.
Support learners throughout their training, offering guidance, feedback and encouragement to help them build confidence and capability.
Contribute to the maintenance, configuration and improvement of the technical infrastructure at the Wood Norton site.
Work closely with colleagues in the Academy Delivery Team to keep course content current, accurate and aligned with the BBC's technical requirements.
Bring insight from industry developments to help strengthen training materials and ensure they reflect modern broadcast practice.
Share knowledge openly within the team, supporting a collaborative environment where expertise is developed and maintained.
General Broadcasting Engineering Skills
Audio Engineering - sound, audio connections, microphones, speakers, mixers etc.
Video Engineering - TV basics, cameras, lenses, video signals, SD, HD, Ultra HDTV, colour, cabling etc.
Networking
Understanding of core Ethernet/IP networks and protocols - types of networks, network layers, unicast, broadcast, multicast, cables, WiFi, routing and routers, switches, etc.
Understanding of practical networking systems such as MikroTik and Cisco, ability to create WAN, LAN, Wifi, VLANs, routing, use of DHCP, DNS, Firewalls and NAT
Understanding of PTP and network timing
Understanding of Wireshark and decoding network packets
Experience of carrying out, and raising changes using a recognised ITSM tool., Audio and Video Skills
Audio over IP
Underlying concepts
Multicasting, PTP, Livewire Dante
Analogue audio engineering skills
Digital Audio (AES3) engineering skills
Video over IP
Understanding of SMPTE 2022 and SMPTE 2110 standards
Broadcast Systems Experience
BBC Broadcasting Systems and Practice
BNCS
Maintenance and installation skills
Experience of working with broadcast production environments, studios or galleries
Awareness of emerging technologies within broadcast engineering and IP-based production workflows
Training and Learning Delivery
Training experience would be desirable, but this can be developed
A desire to train, with clear communication skills and the ability to demonstrate both online and in person
Experience delivering technical training, coaching or mentoring
Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to learners with different levels of knowledge
Confidence in creating or adapting learning materials to meet training objectives
Professional and Personal Qualities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and learners
A collaborative approach with a willingness to share knowledge and support team development
Project work experience
A deep interest in technology and a desire to learn more
