Full Job Description

A vacancy has arisen for a Biomedical scientist in our Cellular Pathology Department based at Lister Hospital following implementation of a new Pathology and Phlebotomy services programme commissioned by the Herts and West Essex Integrated Care Board with services set to commence from 1stMarch 2025. We are looking for an experienced Biomedical Scientist who will become an integral part of our service, being actively involved across all areas of the laboratory., The normal hours of work are 37.5 hours per week; the distribution of which is at the discretion of the Head of Department., To include, but not be restricted to, the following duties: - 1. To provide a consistently efficient, accurate and world-class service to our clients and patients. 2. To produce high quality work and gain a deep understanding of the techniques employed in the department. 3. To produce high quality histological sections, stained with both routine H&E, special demonstration and immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridisation techniques. 4. To prepare material for PCR-based molecular testing. 5. To provide a speedy and high quality frozen section service for the pathologists. 6. To participate in all rotas in operation. 7. To undertake quality control of slides leaving the laboratory. 8. To assist with EQA. 9. To perform batch acceptance testing of all new reagents entering testing services in the laboratory and to assist Section Leads in analysing and trending data generated. 10. To assist in method development and validation as required. 11. To operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to departmental and manufacturers protocols and procedures. 12. To ensure agreed standards for turnaround times of samples and results are met. 13. To be familiar with and proficient in the use of the information technology systems within the Department. 14. To participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the Department. 15. To assist in planning ones own work and that of other staff within a Section. 16. To demonstrate commitment to flexible working patterns, to meet the needs of the service. 17. To participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the department. Experience Essential

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge in discipline of pathology relevant to role.
  • Previous experience in a relevant laboratory, and proficiency in techniques appropriate to the discipline, Registration with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist
  • IBMS Accredited BSc (hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • Participation in a relevant CPD Scheme e.g. IBMS
  • Person Specification Experience Essential

    The Cellular Pathology laboratory at Lister hospital is in the process of transforming its service following implementation of a new Pathology and Phlebotomy services programme commissioned by the Herts and West Essex Integrated Care Board with services set to commence from 1st March 2025 which will see significant investment in the laboratory infrastructure and technology update required to modernise the service in line with the wider HSL consolidated service model operated out of 60 Whitfield Street in Kings Cross. Our new, purpose designed laboratory opened in January 2020, with entirely new equipment, and houses one of the largest Cellular Pathology services in Europe.
