Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist- Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine Service at UHB is a specialised diagnostic and treatment facility based on several sites: the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Good Hope Hospital (GH), Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (HH) and Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH). The case mix is highly specialised; therefore, some investigations and treatments provided at UHB would not be provided at an average district general hospital. The post-holder works in a highly specialised area of health care where consideration of radiation risks and cross infection is paramount. The post holder is a specialist member of the multidisciplinary team providing skilled care and expertise to patients and their families/partners/friends in the Nuclear Medicine setting. The role involves the administration of radionuclides and being able to identify particular needs of these patients. The post holder will be involved in carrying out cardiac stress testing as part of a multidisciplinary team approach to nuclear cardiology investigations as well as providing specialist nursing support to patients undergoing radionuclide therapy The post holder will provide information, support, and clinical expertise to enable the patient to understand their investigation and treatment in a much specialised, often daunting clinical environment. The post also requires delivery of resuscitation training to the larger team (adult and paediatric) along with other training needs.Main duties of the job

• To provide detailed sometimes complex information to patients undergoing diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures. To deliver this information in a manner that the patients understand.
• To work unsupervised whilst administering intravenous (including radioactively labelled blood cells) and oral, diagnostic and therapy, radionuclides to patients, advising and liaising with other healthcare professionals as necessary.
• Under an expanded practice protocol take a major role in the provision of nuclear cardiology cardiac stress testing. This will involve both physical stress techniques and the use of intravenous pharmacological stress agents.
• To provide all nursing care to patients when required who attend the department.
• To be responsible for the ordering, controlling, and monitoring of stock within the department keeping within the agreed budgetary and establishment figures.
• Undertake the role of Hospital Life Support (HLS) and Paediatric Basic Life Support (PBLS) and medical device core trainer; arrange, deliver, and keep records of staff training.
• Provide basic radiation protection advice to patients, ward staff, escorts, and carers on matters of radiation protection arising from the administration of diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides.
• Participate in radiation decontamination procedures of hazardous radioactive spills when required.
• To admit patients to wards as required for treatment following all current admitting guidelines and procedures.
