Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker

The role of Band 3 Support Worker on G1 Older Adults Dementia Assessment Ward is to deliver high-quality, person-centred care to older adults living with dementia during periods of assessment, confusion, and distress. The post holder will support individuals to maintain dignity, independence, and wellbeing within a safe, calm, and therapeutic environment. The role will be expected to demonstrate the following:

• Use person-centred, dementia-friendly communication techniques, including validation, reassurance, clear language, and non-verbal approaches when communicating with patients
• Support individuals living with dementia through periods of confusion, disorientation, distress and cognitive fluctuation
• Support individuals during times of increased agitation, wandering, exit-seeking or altered perception, maintaining safety and dignity.
• Demonstrate understanding of delirium, dementia and depression in older adults and escalate concerns appropriately
• support older adults with personal care in a sensitive, respectful and unrushed manner, recognising impact of cognitive impairment
• Observe and support nutritional intake, hydration and swallowing safety, reporting concerns promptly.
• Encourage and assist with mobility, falls prevention and safe movement, following individual risk assessments.
• Assist in maintaining skin integrity and report any concerns relating to pressure damage or skin deterioration.
• Be able to work a 24/7 shift pattern inclusive of early, late and night shifts.
Main duties of the job Build and maintain safe and effective therapeutic relationships. Support people to identify their own hopes and goals to improve their quality of life Support individuals to contribute to collaborative care/support/recovery plans Communicate effectively with a wide range of people using a range of preferred methods Contribute to monitoring, observing and engaging with individuals, communicating outcomes and conclusions with the rest of the team Gain an understanding of a person's experiences in relation to their mental health, learning disability and/or dementia Understand a person's coping strategies and strengths and support people to use these at times of distress or difficulty Be able to recognise increasing risk and alert significant others and the team to respond as needed Undertake a range of practical tasks and duties in support of the Team and individual needs. Follow principles of diffusion and de-escalation and where physical interventions or restraint are required, to approach in line with approved techniques considering the safety and dignity of the individual throughout. To feel confident to be able to report untoward incidents and areas of concern as soon as they arise
