Avoiding Brain Injuries in Childbirth Champion, Band 6 (4.5 hours a week) 'Internal Applicants Only' The ABC Midwife will work in partnership and serve as the ABC perinatal team leads within the Trust to successfully: - Foster a strong perinatal team dynamic (obstetricians, anaesthetists, neonatologists, midwives) - Champion the collaborative design, delivery and implementation of the ABC Elements - Impacted fetal head (IFH) and Intrapartum Fetal Deterioration (IFD) with their Trust using Quality Improvement methodology in collaboration with the practice development and risk and quality teams. - Ensure that effective embedding and sustainability processes are in place to ensure the long-term adoption of the bundle elements are ongoing practices., The post-holders will fully understand background and requirements and will champion the ABC Bundle across the perinatal team and within their own department and Trust. They will complete the following supported by the perinatal team: - Act as the local clinical contact for the ABC programme within the Trust and help to embed and sustain the ABC programme elements. - Ensure awareness of the programme amongst perinatal staff. - Alongside the practice development team support mini/trolley teach ABC education sessions and support simulation sessions. - Attend a 1-hour virtual monthly/bi-monthly Community of Practice (CoP) with Health Innovation West of England which will include a quarterly meeting to share updates and learning from your organisation, a quarterly ABC focused education session and a quarterly drop-in support session (optional). - Help to embed ABC tools such as the IFD tool and algorithms and proformas. - Work with their maternity risk, practice development, quality improvement and fetal surveillance teams to obtain staff training and compliance on IFH and IFD and anonymised data relating to incidence and outcomes IFH and IFD episodes. - If required and deemed relevant and necessary, perform mini audits to support information gathering and insights that will help with effective programme delivery. Please review the attached Role Descriptor for further details., Link with the digital team to support digital aspects of the programme. - Where possible attend and contribute to multidisciplinary case reviews of incidents involving potential brain injury. - Identify and address barriers to implementation at ward level which can be shared with the regional implementation team to gain support to overcome challenges faced. - Promote psychological safety in debriefing and reflective practice and role model escalation and speaking up behaviours. There will be an opportunity to undertake Culture Coach training for Clinical Champions. - Advocate for compassionate communication with families and ensure that learning from family feedback is incorporated into improvements. - Support embedding ABC into business as usual practice and contribute to long-term sustainability planning. - Registered Midwife with current NMC registration
- Significant post-registration experience within maternity services
- Experience of multidisciplinary working across maternity and neonatal services
- Experience of contributing to service development, quality improvement, education or practice development initiatives
- Knowledge of maternity governance, patient safety, risk management and fetal surveillance, Experience of supporting staff learning through teaching, coaching, simulation or clinical supervision, Strong clinical leadership skills with the ability to influence and engage colleagues across the multidisciplinary team
- Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build effective professional relationships and foster collaborative team working
- Understanding of quality improvement methodologies and change management principles
- Ability to identify barriers to implementation and develop practical solutions
- Ability to deliver education, facilitate learning and support simulation training, Experience of implementing and sustaining change within a clinical environment
- Ability to analyse information, contribute to audits and utilise data to inform quality improvement initiatives
- Knowledge of psychological safety, human factors and reflective learning principles
- Confident using digital systems and supporting implementation of digital solutions where required, Passionate about improving outcomes for women, babies and families and reducing avoidable harm
- Self-motivated, enthusiastic and able to work independently
- Resilient, adaptable and able to manage competing priorities
- Positive role model who promotes a culture of openness, learning and continuous improvement
