Assistant Curator

We are looking for an Assistant Curator to join the BFI's Curatorial Team, acting as a key link between the BFI Screencraft collections (designs, posters and stills) and the Stories in Motion programme (a major National Lottery-funded programme designed to broaden access to the UK's screen heritage). The Assistant Curator will, work closely with the Screencraft and Heritage Programmes team, wider BFI colleagues, and external partners. The role is responsible for scoping, developing and delivering high-quality, accessible, and engaging collections-based programmes, resources, and activities that connect audiences across the UK with material from the national collection. A particular focus will be on broadening audience engagement, increasing participation from underrepresented communities, and supporting collaborative partnerships that enhance awareness and appreciation of the BFI National Archive and its collections.

What you'll do

Identify, develop and deliver new audience facing opportunities for the BFI's Screencraft collections (particularly photographs, designs and graphic arts), with specific attention to new and diverse audiences, ensuring alignment with cross programme delivery, lottery objectives and outcomes.

Work with the Screencraft and Heritage Programmes teams to develop a portfolio of new and existing cultural, engagement and learning activities, tracking progress and supporting collections opportunities.

Undertake a full range of collections responsibilities in relation to the project, including cataloguing, digitisation to aid exhibition and engagement support, as well as talks and study sessions. Ensuring collections are fully embedded in programming in vibrant and new ways

Support the Curator with delivery against agreed objectives, including undertaking research administration, digitisation, preparing works for transport and liaising with venues, fine art agents and external contractors and venues.

Experience of collections engagement work across multiple venues, this could include a museum, gallery, archive, library, community or educational spaces.

Experience of working in a socially engaged way with public and sector audiences, artists, makers and communities

Experience of co-generating and delivering new engagement strategies, with the ability to think and write creatively for audiences

Experience of developing and supporting collections initiatives in external venues where developing and maintaining partnership with others was key to their success.
