Art technician

This is a term time plus one week post, working 36 weeks of the year. Monday to Friday - hours of work can be full time 0830-1700 or 0900-1500. Some evening and weekend work may be required in the build up to major exhibitions. At particularly busy times of the year (Open Day in October, Moderation in June and exhibitions in October/November and June/July) it is expected that the Art technician will be able to work extra hours. As our Art & Design Technician, you'll play a key role in supporting the day-to-day running of our vibrant and creative Art Department. You'll ensure our studios, workshops and specialist spaces are safe, organised and fully equipped, enabling staff and pupils to focus on creativity and learning. Working closely with the Head of Art & Design and teaching staff, you'll prepare materials for lessons, maintain specialist equipment, organise displays and exhibitions, and support a wide range of departmental activities, from workshops and educational visits to examinations and exhibitions. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for art and design who enjoys working in a practical, hands-on environment and takes pride in creating inspiring spaces for learning. What you'll be doing You'll be involved in:

• Organising and maintaining the department's studios, classrooms and storage areas to ensure they remain tidy, safe and fully stocked.
• Preparing materials, equipment and resources for lessons, workshops and extracurricular activities.
• Managing stock levels, placing and tracking orders, and maintaining accurate inventory records.
• Operating, maintaining and supporting the safe use of specialist equipment, including kilns, sewing machines, cameras and printers.
• Assisting with health and safety, risk assessments and ensuring compliance across the department.
• Liaising with the Estates and ICT teams, suppliers and contractors to coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs.
• Maintaining specialist art equipment and resources, including still-life collections, brushes, rollers, silk screens and digital equipment.
• Organising, cataloguing and archiving pupils' artwork and examination coursework.
• Mounting and displaying artwork across the School, including exhibitions, display boards and examination moderation displays.
• Preparing exhibition materials, labels, visual resources and presentation materials using Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop (or similar software).
• Photographing pupils' artwork and departmental events for displays, records and the School's communications.
• Supporting educational visits, artist workshops, life drawing sessions and other departmental events.
• Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people in accordance with the School's safeguarding policies.
  
  Passionate about art, design and supporting creative learning.
• Highly organised, with excellent attention to detail.
• Practical, proactive and able to manage a varied workload.
• An excellent communicator who enjoys working collaboratively with staff and pupils.
• Confident using Microsoft Office applications; experience with Adobe Photoshop or similar software would be an advantage.
• Comfortable learning to operate and maintain specialist workshop equipment.
• Flexible, adaptable and able to prioritise effectively in a busy environment.
• Friendly, approachable and committed to delivering a high standard of support.
• Able to use initiative and work both independently and as part of a team., Five GCSEs (Grade 4/C or above), including English and Mathematics, or equivalent qualifications.
• A qualification in Art & Design or a related subject (desirable).
• Experience of working in an art, design or educational environment (desirable).
• Good IT, literacy and numeracy skills.
• An appreciation of the values and ethos of an independent school.
Please note that this is a practical role and will involve regular lifting, carrying and moving of materials, equipment and display items.
