AI Automation and Systems Engineer

This is a pioneering role within further education and will place the successful candidate at the centre of Hull College's digital transformation agenda. Reporting to the Executive Director of Digital Infrastructure and Innovation, the postholder will work across curriculum, business support and operational teams to engineer scalable automations, integrate systems, streamline workflows and identify practical applications for emerging AI technologies.

The role combines software engineering, systems integration, workflow automation and applied AI. The successful candidate will work directly with stakeholders to understand operational challenges, then architect and implement technical solutions that reduce workload, eliminate duplication, improve responsiveness and create measurable efficiencies across the College.

Responsibilities of our AI Automation and Systems Engineer:

Design, develop and maintain AI-enabled automations and intelligent workflows across the College.

Integrate systems, APIs and digital services to improve organisational workflows and data movement.

Engineer practical AI-assisted solutions that support teaching, learning, admissions, student services, HR, finance and operational teams.

Develop integrations between College systems, platforms and third-party applications.

Work directly with teams across the College to analyse processes and identify automation opportunities.

Translate operational challenges into technical solutions that improve productivity and user experience.

Research, test and evaluate new tools and technologies for potential organisational use.

Gather requirements, map workflows and support teams through implementation and adoption.

Ensure all automation and AI solutions comply with GDPR, safeguarding, cyber security and data protection requirements.

Contribute to the College's wider digital transformation and operational improvement agenda.

Degree or equivalent experience in Computing, Software Engineering, IT or related field

Experience building workflow automations using platforms such as n8n, Make, Zapier or Power Automate

Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences

Knowledge of data protection, cyber security and safe data handling

Experience troubleshooting and optimising technical workflows

Experience working with APIs, integrations and webhooks

Working Hours: 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

Salary: £34,602 per annum

Annual Leave: 31 days per annum (excluding bank holidays and up to 3 additional discretionary days over the Christmas/New Year period)
