Full Job Description

Percy Street Collective was set up in the Percy Street Workshop in 2022 with the mission to support young neurodiverse people in Sheffield and South Yorkshire to realise their creative potential, enhance their self-confidence and, where possible help them progress towards paid work.

We do this through our team workshop sessions where we employ a number of making skills and take people through the safe use of workshop machinery and hand tools. We focus on projects that involve other voluntary sector organisations in Sheffield on a collaborative basis.

We take people through the design and making process including preliminary briefing with customers, design using sketches and CAD, processes and cutting lists, making and final delivery on site to the customer.

The post of Workshop Lead will initially be for 20 hours per week for a period of 12 months commencing June 2024.

It is expected that the hours will occur on 3 consecutive days but this may evolve and change over time and by agreement.

Our team of Directors, volunteers and young people has delivered numerous projects mainly based on woodworking in our fully equipped Percy Street workshop.

We engage in collaborative projects with other social enterprises in and around Sheffield and a selective number of commercial companies. We use these projects to help and support the young people who come to us.

You will work mostly in the workshop but will also visit sites for installation and to meet our customers. Your work will involve supporting young people to express their creativity - with the theme of: The Joy of Making Things.

In all your work you will be fully supported and aided by the directors, our volunteers and the young people we work with.

Candidates will have a range of qualifications and experience including some of the following:

  • NVQ Level 3 - Joinery

  • City and Guilds - Carpentry and Joinery

  • CSCS Card

  • QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate

  • Other equivalent qualifications

  • Previous teaching experience at school or FE Level

  • Experience of supporting young people with special needs

  • Experience of working in the voluntary sector

  • Other relevant experience

  • Your ability to demonstrate empathy with young people who need support and encouragement to excel is of equal importance to your qualifications.

You are now leaving the VAS website and being taken to VAS's VC Connect online services. These are owned and managed by VAS.
