Full Job Description

Take on a new challenge and apply your mechanical engineering expertise in a new cutting-edge field. You'll report to Heath Caddy (Metier Train System Mechanical Domain Lead), and work alongside a diverse and supportive team of like-minded engineering professionals.

You'll specifically be responsable for the HVAC system on current and future projects, identifying HVAC system requirements, best fit standard solutions, specifying HVAC control and performance requirements to sub suppliers, supporting integration design, ensure static and running performance, make the case for approvals and fulfil the needs of our customers.

Based in Engineering and a member of the Train System community, you will deliver technical solutions for the Derby project portfolio which includes multiple unit trains and monorails.

Working in multi-disciplined teams and collaborating across the Engineering team and with wider stakeholders, you will own the development of Train level HVAC specifications utilising existing solutions from Alstom portfolio and identifying any developments required from utilizing your previous HVAC system experience. You will lead activities throughout the project V-Cycle with a QDC mindset to define and deliver the required performance through verification and validation.

We'll look to you for:

  • Identify potential HVAC solutions from higher level and broader overall train requirements.

  • Identify where solutions from an existing Alstom portfolio can fit in to leverage volume benefits and world-wide relations with the supply base.

  • Identify functional and interface requirements, identify all participants, and achieve common and full understanding of requirements and solutions.

  • Support verification of equipment and assembly for first in class.

  • Identify how requirements can be verified through the V cycle including multiple layers of calculation, modelling, static and on track testing.

  • Report verification data to demonstrate compliance to standards to approvals bodies and customers.

  • Identify and resolve problems that arrive on initial operation, whilst demonstrating an ethical and civic outlook.

  • The successful candidate will be required to work at height from time to time

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree and / or suitably accredited with an applicable professional Institution (e.g. I Mech E / ASHRAE /IET / CIBSE)

  • Proven track record and engineering experience in rolling stock HVAC systems, multiple years of experience

  • Collaborating in a multi-location team

  • Seeing the big picture and the local detail

  • Characterizing and integrating HVAC systems, control and performance.

  • Interpreting large volumes of train level and localised data identifying patterns and anomalies for further attention.

  • Presenting analysis of test and other data in a rigorous and clear manner.

  • From limited operational data identifying if problems exist, their characteristics, and any further investigation required
