Full Job Description

The Apprentice Structural Engineer is expected to support the Engineering Line Manager and is responsible for handling projects within own level of authority. You will be responsible for the following:

  • Assisting the Engineering team preparation of reports, calculations, design and preparation of drawings.

  • Assisting the Engineering team to provide technical advice to clients.

  • Assisting the Engineering team to obtaining planning and/or building regulations approval.

  • Monitoring and inspecting work undertaken by contractors.

  • Liaising with other professionals such as architects and building surveyors.

  • Assisting the Engineering team to maintain client relationships by providing excellent customer service and managing expectations.

  • Assisting the Engineering team with inspection and surveys of client properties and sites.

  • Assisting the Engineering team to ensure that all projects comply with legal requirements including CDM2015, Part wall, Listed buildings.

  • Assessment of sustainability and environmental impact of projects.

  • At all times to comply with the requirements of the Company's administrative, personnel procedures and Health & Safety regulations.


  • You will study for the Level 6 Civil Engineer Degree Apprenticeship at either Northumbria University or Teesside University. The duration of your Degree Apprenticeship is based on a typical 37.5-hour working week, with 7.5 hours per week being used for off-the-job training. This will be delivered via one day per week on campus at university. You will complete the course in 5 years.

    Upon successful completion of the programme you will be awarded a Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship (equivalent to a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering) and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), following successful passing of the End Point Assessment.

    The Person
    Entry Requirements: Applicants for this course will need to meet the standard BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering entry qualifications:

    120 UCAS Tariff points (BBB equivalent) from three A-levels or equivalent qualifications, including maths and another analytical science subject. GCSES - English and Maths grade C/4
  • Some experience and working knowledge (although not essential) of consulting engineering, surveying, architectural & planning practices and procedures supported by an awareness of the latest statutory requirements, technical publications and guidelines.

  • Some experience and understanding (although not essential) of CDM Regs 2015, Party wall and Building Regs legislation

  • Experience in working to deadlines

  • Sound mathematical, scientific and IT skills

  • The ability to think methodically to problem solve and manage projects

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation
