This role is within our Data Team, which is critical in ensuring the success of our internal systems and external products. They get knee-deep in our SQL Server databases, create new objects and structures, maintain and enhance existing functionality, and troubleshoot issues. All this ensures our products meet our primary markets' needs - schools, local authorities, and multi-academy trusts (MATs).

Data is essential to the education sector. Our team is crucial in providing insights, supporting decision-making, and helping customers understand their strengths and challenges, become more efficient, and deliver value.

We have a nationwide reach and impact on education, working with every local authority, a growing number of MATs, and 20,000 schools across England. As a result, our team handles vast amounts of data of varying types: from tens of millions of pupil assessment and census records to hundreds of thousands of lesson observations and performance management reviews, from data relating to vulnerable children to up-to-the-minute pupil attendance records. The sensitivity of this data means security is paramount.,

  • Develop, maintain and enhance database objects to ensure accuracy and performance.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex database issues, including performance tuning and optimization.

  • Produce realistic test, training and demo data for developer and test teams.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data integrity, security, and optimal system performance.

  • Stay current with database technologies, trends, and best practices.

    Degree-level education in computer science, information systems or a related field

  • At least five years of proven experience as a database developer, proficient in SQL Server and T-SQL.

  • Familiarity with data modelling and database design principles

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Be a British citizen, or have the status of indefinite leave to remain and work without restriction in the UK


  • Desirable

  • Experience handling large volumes of data (terabytes or more, preferably)

  • Experience working with educational data or with the education sector

  • Knowledge of data protection regulations

  • Knowledge of web systems

  • Experience with productivity tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Slack

  • Experience with a general-purpose programming language, preferably Python or C#
