Full Job Description

This is a one of 2 additional Specialty doctor permanent posts. The successful candidates will join the enthusiastic team in our Otolaryngology directorate, joining two existing Specialty doctors.

The Specialty doctor posts in the department are designed to provide exposure to the breadth of otolaryngology . The four rotating posts will each focus on a different subspeciality area- Paediatric ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, Rhinology and Otology.

The outpatient sessions comprise of general ENT clinics and clinics with a subspecialty focus, of which some are aligned with a respective subspecialty consultant. The post offers a comprehensive range of outpatient and inpatient services which covers all aspects of the specialty. A balance of independent and supervised theatre sessions are provided depending on the competencies of the postholder. There is a degree of flexibility within the department which allows for arranging exposure to additional and specialty lists. The postholder will be encouraged to evolve a specialist interest.

Main duties of the job

The Speciality doctor team will also share responsibility in delivering an element of day to day in-patient care, as well as an on-call commitment in the second tier, by working with the specialist registrar team and associate specialist, and supported by first tier doctors and Nurse Practitioners. The on-call will comprise a second tier on-call, on a 1:8 frequency, and is well supported by the Consultant team, who operate a consultant of the week rota during the day and out of hours. Daytime second tier on call is delivered as a separate working week block during which there is no planned elective clinical activity.

There is much opportunity in this post for teaching and training (nurses, pre-graduate medical students, and post graduate junior doctors). There are prospects for leading audit projects and joining research projects, with presentation possibilities at clinical governance meetings as well as external meetings. Such activities are encouraged and supported by the department. It is expected that the successful candidates will engage in these activities.

The medical team deliver the service working closely together with colleagues - ENT nurse practitioners, H&N specialist nurses, audio-vestibular audiologists, and in house Speech and Language therapy.

The unit comprises a modern, purpose built outpatient and audiology department offering the latest facilities in the investigation, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients. The ENT outpatient department is well equipped with state of the art audio-visual equipment for training and recording. The outpatient department is designed around a central treatment area which includes a seminar room and temporal bone laboratory.

The audiology department offers OAE, ERA, electro-cochleography and BSER. It is a regional cochlear implant centre offering a full range of hearing implants, and has a comprehensive balance disorders service. The department provides a sub-regional Head & Neck cancer service and hosts the MDT, linking with associated specialist services including robotic surgery, as well as combining with the on-site neurosurgical team in lateral and medial skull base surgery.

Specialist clinics held in ENT outpatients include multi-disciplinary combined head and neck oncology clinic, vestibular disorder clinic, cochlear implant clinic, specialist otology clinic, specialist paediatric clinic, specialist rhinology clinic, allergy clinics and botilinum toxin clinic for dystonia.
