An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust in a newly created post as a Specialist Grade Doctor in Paediatric Spinal Surgery. Applications are invited from candidates with suitable training and experience for a full time, 10 PA 12-month fixed term post. This is a new post within the team with the intention of reviewing funding arrangements with potential to extend following funding approval. The post is a paediatric Spinal Surgery post.
The post holder will join a team of 4 substantive Consultants in providing the Spinal Surgery service to Sheffield and the surrounding area. There is no formal on-call commitment, however the candidate will cover Spinal Surgery emergencies during weekday daytimes.
Applicants should possess FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent certification at the time of appointment and have had appropriate experience within a dedicated paediatric hospital. It would be essential for the candidate to be fellowship trained or equivalent in Paediatric Spinal Surgery.
Any Doctor who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with the Spinal Surgery team lead., The appointee, working together with Consultant colleagues, will be responsible for providing a paediatric Spinal Surgery service for Sheffield and South Yorkshire.
The Specialist Grade Doctor will have the opportunity to work autonomously to a level of defined competencies, as agreed within local governance frameworks. This will be evidenced with a logbook, patient feedback, no evidence of complaints and other specific evidence. The post holder will be responsible for patients in their areas of practice as an 'expert decision maker' and work alongside the Consultants within the team. On gaining approval for autonomous practice, the post holder is expected to work towards having individual waiting lists, be identified as named clinician for their patients, and conduct clinics in their own name. The Doctor will work alongside the Consultants in the team. It is expected that the candidate will refer on complex referrals to the appropriate Consultant where there is already experience
within the team, e.g. SMA, Osteogenesis
The post holder will provide expertise in Spinal Surgery and will manage the full range of general and acute paediatric Spinal Surgery presentations.
